Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – Southern Cross Lyrics 15 years ago
This is one of my favorite songs of all time, and it is beautifully written discussing love, loss, and life.
In this song they speak of
"Think about how many times I have fallen. Spirits are using me, larger voices calling.
What heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten.
I have been around the world, looking for that woman-girl who knows love can endure.
And you know it will, and you know it will."

He is saying whatever heaven brought him to be with his past love cannot be forgotten(no matter what your interpretation may be of heaven) and he thanks it for happening. But now he has traveled/sailed all over the world "Looking for that woman-girl who knows love can endure", which is him looking for a woman who's love for him will last forever and one who will not leave him.

"When you see the Southern Cross for the first time,
you understand now why you came this way.
Cause the truth you might be running from is so small.
But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a coming day."

This is pretty straight forward to me. It's saying when you go to this part of the world(Caribbean/southern hemisphere) you'll know why it was worth it. He said he was running from some small truth, in this case I think it's love, but now he realizes hope in the promise of future love in the days to come.

"I have my ship and all her flags are a flying.
She is all that I have left and music is her name....
Somebody fine will come along, make me forget about loving you at the Southern Cross."

This part at the middle/end of the song shows the hope that he has found on his trip. He now has his "Ship" which he says is music so music is keeping him afloat and now music and his love for it is the only love he has left and the only love that hasn't left him.

And the last part "Somebody fine will come along, make me forget about loving you at the Southern Cross." Shows how he now as he returns home now has a new found hope that a new love will find him and help him forget about the woman and the heartache he experienced because of her while he was in the southern cross.

To me that is what it means. Pretty simple explanation, but also I think it is a pretty deep message. Just putting my take on it. Would love comments.

Jimmy Buffett – One Particular Harbour Lyrics 15 years ago
I like your way of looking at it LaBradford.

"I know I don't get there often enough
But God knows I surely try
It's a magic kind of medicine
That no doctor could prescribe"

I think your quotes and this quote describe exactly what you were saying. It is that escape you have from the crazy life most of us live now a days. It's wherever your perfect place of happiness happens to be. Jimmy Buffett is my favorite all time artist and his songs are amazingly deep and meaningful... even if he plays his free easygoing persona. Like he always said, "I sell Escapism."
