This reminds me so much of the film Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. If you're familiar with the movie, the blankets on the speech is a specific correlation between this song and the movie. Not to mention, what happens in the film's plot is a lot like these lyrics in most ways. |

Somehow, Wilco has made the most understated song in the world. The very definition of poetry, and the idea that flawlessness is only had by those who choose not to seek it. That is what I think when I hear this song. Unbelievably calm and still unbelievably active harmonies. The lyrics are basically just impossible. No artist has lines that follow like this. This is fluid. This whole song is like a walking oxymoron...but everything seems to be in its right place. She's a sleepy kisser, this is a tired love. The vocals are all tired. The juxtaposition of hit and miss in the first and last verses is truly incredible. Examine that and you have to realize the true genius of this song. "I passed through, before I knew you." I hope that line means everything to you, because of something in particular, a person or event, etc. This song is about you. Think of how everything relates to your life. Music is a personal meaning. Whether this artist was writing about drugs or about someone he knew, it doesn't matter to anyone but him. And that's a good thing. What does it mean to you? Live this song...and love living every step of the way. I hope you get what you need. |

i also think this is about hoping to be a part of an extraterrestrial encounter...the first part of the song shows signs of paranoia towards the aliens viewing the humans all the time, and his friends dont believe him...the first four lines kind of sound like he just awoke back on earth after being abducted the night before and how his sense of smell has deteriorated and he is watching the cracks in the pavement because he is getting his legs back from the journey that took place, or that he just had a dream about the same thing and is getting his wits about him...the aliens visit earth to get footage of humans that are so closed off that they never let anyone into their lives, they live for their secrets, saying they never give anything away or share themselves with others...he wishes that the aliens would take him away so he could be completely free
this is actually one of my favorite songs of all time...and i condemn anyone who's first response is "this is trippy"...it is not about being trippy, and it is not about getting high or drugs of any nature, so enough with it already...this album has a lot of great sounds on it that sound out of this world, but please dont call it trippy...it is beauty...it is everything i hope to discover on earth one day, and i hope it is not just what other people discover outside of earth some day |

i understand that this is probably about his girlfriend, but it is impossible to ignore the eloquent suicide references...he tells her to ride to the highest point of the rollercoaster and leap off...and he says it isnt dignified to run, as if she has something in life to run away from...also, he says she could climb to the fingernail of the statue of liberty, and jump off that...and he could be there when she lands, almost as if he is already dead, and they would be together again if she were to kill herself
but still with all this, it seems like the consensus is that this is about his girlfriend coming to visit him wherever he is...and there are lines that support that in the song, but i seemed to find more that supported the suicide opinion...i love the song either way |
