The Shins – The Rifle's Spiral Lyrics 3 years ago
After watching the official stop-motion music video, it makes me think of an artist fighting to keep the integrity of their work intact. They gave up their life for their passion, for their craft, but the vultures snatch it up and try to monetize it. In order to keep from selling out and ruining their vision, they basically have to jump through hoops and perform magic, always running and staying one step ahead of everyone.

I know Mercer said it's about a suicide bomber, but given the music video, I think this other interpretation works well too. I really enjoy the idea of the main character in the video pulling one over on those greedy business execs. :)

Incubus – Martini Lyrics 10 years ago
These lyrics have a lot of variations on different websites. I don't think any "official" lyrics have been published so it's all a guessing game really, but here are some of my thoughts.

Second stanza of the first verse:

"They gave her diamonds, shiny boys,
CITY'S PEAK, every joy"

As in they gave her a place at the top of the city. The former "city speak" just doesn't make sense to me in the context of "they gave her every joy." Thoughts?

And the beginning of the second verse:

"fast cars, booze and bars,
try all, end it, drown in the scars"

Most websites have the lyrics as, "trial and it drown in the scars", but that just seems off to me. The word "drown" is present tense. It would make more sense if he said "trial and it drowned in scars", but he clearly doesn't say "drowned" and the word "the" definitely precedes the word "scars" which just seems weird no matter how you look at it. Most of the verse segments are short, comma separated lists of objects or events that give evidence to her stubborn attitude. So it seems more likely that it's supposed to be another list, "try all (OR trial), end it, drown in the scars." Just makes more sense in my opinion.

What do you guys think?

Death Cab for Cutie – Passenger Seat Lyrics 11 years ago
This song sounds sad to me. I know a lot of people think it's got positive implications, but the notes just ring of depression in my opinion. I read somewhere that Gibbard has said his lyrics are almost always negative (or something to that effect). I don't think it makes this song bad, it just makes me think of it in a different way. To me the singer is thinking about their feelings for the driver, but knows the driver doesn't feel the same way, and the idea is that the happiness of the car ride will be over soon (as will the relationship).

The Postal Service – Brand New Colony Lyrics 14 years ago
It's a beautiful song but I wonder about its true underlying message and emotional tone. I read on the wikipedia page for this album that Gibbard had proclaimed [Such Great Heights] "the only song he had ever written that was positive about love." If that was true at the time this album came out it can only mean this song [Brand New Colony] is not necessarily a positive love song, unless of course he didn't actually write it.

First of all, I'm not going to say the clicking noise at the beginning is a gun, as many people seem to think. My first thought was a wind up music box or a toy, etc...

Secondly, I'm not so sure there is "suicidal death" involved in the lyrical message as Kenious suggests. That's a little extreme in my opinion, and there are no "overly obvious" ties to this idea besides "cut our bodies free" which seems more likely related to the saying "cut ties" because the singer is suggesting that they cut ties with society or their current lives so they can be together.

The thing that DID stand out to me was the repetition of the words "everything will change" at the end of the song. The pace of the music slows down quite a bit, and just made me think, everything that was happy at the beginning of the song has the potential to fail (or change). When two people fall in love everything changes for the best. As it's repeated, however, maybe we are supposed to be reminded that love can fade and everything can change for the worst. [OR] maybe we are simply meant to think about how things can change for good or for bad in general, not just with love but with anything in life. Those are the thoughts I was left with.

Not as happy, not overwhelmingly sad either, but very deep and good none the less :)
