I totally agree with your comment: "The beauty of music is that people tend to let different songs mean to them what they want it to mean to them." To ME (maybe not to you OR the Avett Brothers), this song talks to me about the falsehoods of mainstream Christianity – especially of the lie that most of mankind will suffer endlessly in a place called "hell". This caused so much unwarranted fear in my life as a young boy. My personal interpretation of this great tune: "There's a darkness upon me that's flooded in light" - "Darkness upon me"? The church's teaching about the supposed fate of most of mankind. - "Flooded in light"? This is my spirit telling me it is all a lie and that God is truly "the Savior of ALL MEN" (1 Tim 2:4-6, 4:10, Col 1:16-20, Luke 3:6, etc) "In the fine print they tell me what's wrong and what's right" - Again, the false doctrines of the church. "And it comes in black and it comes in white And I'm frightened by those who don't see it" - The true Gospel of the salvation of ALL is "black and white". It is clear in scripture and I am frightened by those (Christians) who cannot or WILL not see it. When nothing is owed, deserved or expected - God's love, mercy and salvation. And your life doesn't change by the man that's elected - Amen! Most Christians think it does! If you're loved by someone you're never rejected - We are ALL loved unconditionally by Christ and He will not "reject/cast off forever"! Decide what to be and go be it. - Go with the truth that is placed in your heart and forget the lies! "There was a dream One day I could see it" - Of the truth that God loves ME and ALL His creation. "Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded that somebody free it" - Free ME from the fear of the church's false teachings. And there was a kid, with a head full of doubt - Me, because of the teachings of "hell". So I scream til I die or the last of those bad thoughts are finally out - The bad thoughts of "going to hell" - are finally OUT! And I'm frightened by those who don't see it. |
