Not entirely sure what this song is completely about. Knowing Jack White (and knowing he left *seminary school* to be a musician), I would either say he's a protestant who is criticizing Catholicism, or he is describing the negative sides of Mary's giving birth to Jesus, like the stigma that must have come to a girl giving birth before marriage. (As in "carry this burden" and the baby crying.) And, again, knowing Jack, it could also be safe to say that this song does not have one simple point to it. Maybe Jack is just trying to be all dark and broody by turning a Biblical thing into a dismal and dark song. He is, after all, an effing weirdo. One of my favorite musicians and role models, but an effing weirdo nonetheless. He does say "sister of mine, mother to the world" though, which definitely seems like a positive, pro-Christian line. That's why I don't think this song is anti-religion or anti-Christian in any way. I think, in an effort to be dark and broody, Jack's pointing out the downsides and hardships Mary faced when being pregnant with Jesus. Feel free to comment and agree/disagree. |
