Stan Rogers – Northwest Passage Lyrics 10 years ago
@[River:5469] Wolf

I'd say even the final line of the final verse is more telling...

"To find there but the road back home again"

Once he's there the only thing of value is the road leading him home.

Tom Waits – A Little Rain (For Clyde) Lyrics 10 years ago
@[joe5316608:4627] Where does this Q&A come from?

That's a very 'Tom Waits' response! Especially "it's a song you can add another verse to, if you want" since he seems to change songs around during live performances at his whim. Doesn't really say much about what the song is *about*, but what the song feels like. Thanks for sharing this!

Primus – The Chastising of Renegade Lyrics 12 years ago
5 years later and I'm still not sure about two of the lines (the 3rd and 4th line):

Renegade, this hurts me more than you, but pops gotta do what hes gotta do, c'mere boy.
Renegade, I've done 'bout all I can, come take your medicine like a man, c'mere boy.
Renegade, this hurts me more than you, my aims to try to stop what you been doin', c'mere boy.
Renegade, hands up, turn around, reach or I'll spank that fanny down, c'mere boy.
Renegade, this hurts me more than you, best start doin' what I tell you to, c'mere boy.
Renegade, don't make me waste my time, ain't gonna spoil no son of mine, c'mere boy.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, its weird. The lyrical content and mood of the song don't do anything to condemn the actions described which is a little disturbing to me.

I feel like this song has some sort of link to how mental illness makes one feel isolated and alone.

Devin Townsend – Life Is All Dynamics Lyrics 13 years ago
I know that Devin has stated that neither religion nor politics are relevant in his music, but I feel like this song is about the metaphor of 'god' and 'heaven' being so much more simple than people make it. Every thing is in variable acts of motion, aptly named Dynamics, and that once you realize it there is no reason to view yourself above others and natural processes that are occurring all around us. We are all one in the universe, swirling through the cosmos on the same journey.
So cut the bullshit, get over yourself, and enjoy it. :)

Devin Townsend – Gato Lyrics 13 years ago
He said on his 'By a Thread' DVD that this song is about "pussy". I think that BobbyjointRitual is on the right track though. Seems to be about a person who has their primal instincts above all else and as a result fails to connect or empathize with others in a real way.

Regardless, this song is pretty killer.

Strapping Young Lad – Wrong Side Lyrics 13 years ago
I am fairly certain this is about how Devin feels about S.Y.L. as a band, before breaking up after this final tour. This song seems to be about the remorse of having to leave it all behind, but his acceptance to do so.

"Woke up screaming on the Wrong Side of the head!
Dreaming of demons who'd be better off.. better off dead!"

If you've ever heard Dev talk about S.Y.L., you know that he had some serious emotional duality about things, hence the separation of all of his 'Devin Townsend' releases versus S.Y.L. This line is simply showing that duality, waking up and having the dark S.Y.L. content that he required him to be in that state to write about it. Much like a method actor.

"Now I know i'm accountable for the things I've said before!
But I just can't shut up and get out the door!"

Understanding that what he has created is his responsibility, but he is reluctant to just leave it all. However its clear another part of him wants to leave it behind, which is shown in other lyrics:

"Say the word and i'll be gone forever and ever.. (get up, get out)
Singing the good for the bad in the age of the fall
Now the enemy plays for the whole fucking world!"

This lyric is simply showing what this final sound of S.Y.L. is meant to be. A final performance of his dark side to finally expel the negative feelings he is haunted with, mixing with S.Y.L.'s ever increasing popularity from album to album.

I'd encourage you guys to keep thinking about the rest of the lyrics that I haven't analyzed in this sense. The lyrical content of this album is quite 'meta' (hate to use that term, but its what applies), and self critical of the band and what it had been and what it was becoming at the time.

Danko Jones – Had Enough Lyrics 13 years ago
Correct lyrics in case anyone else sees some errors in those lyrics.

You always think you're right
But when you realize you're wrong
You turn your head and pass the buck
Woah-a-oh

You're neither here nor there
You're never playin' fair
then wonder why you're always found alone
Woah-a-oh

You're always sayin' things and exaggeratin'
It's hard to know just who you are
You keep on prayin' but things just stay the same
You fail to look to see that everybody's been waitin'

When you cry at night, alone and don't know why
There's no one left and I'll be walking home
When you burn in hell remember what I said
You had your chance, I've had enough
I've had enough

You're always sayin' things and exaggeratin'
It's hard to know just who you are
You keep on prayin' but things just stay the same
You fail to look and see that everybody's been waitin'

When you cry at night, alone and don't know why
There's no one left and I'll be walking home
When you burn in hell remember what I said
You had your chance I've had enough
I've had enough

(x2)
I'm sick of sufferin'
You give me nothin'
I need somethin'

(x2)
You're only playin'
We're all fadin'
We're sick of waitin' (waitin')

When you criticize
With your pretty eyes
You drove a stake right through my heart

When you burn in hell
Remember what I said
You had your chance I've had enough

I've had enough (x6)

Aesop Rock – No Regrets Lyrics 15 years ago
I disagree on a few points. Primarily:
'that could allude to her being a person with no beliefs or wisdom of life because she just focused on creating art and nothing more, and what child can grow to be a functional human without learning to dream.'
I don't see how not 'learning to dream' doesn't make you a 'functional human'. Your definition of 'functional human' just appealing to the majority. The whole concept of the album is around the working class (the majority) and that sort. Lucy succeeds in living her life in such a way that she is free to do what she wants. Just read the lyrics in 9-5ers Anthem. This song is NOT a warning; if anything, this song is a recommendation. Remember:

"You can dream a little dream
Or you can live a little dream
I'd rather live it
Cuz dreamers always chase
But never get it"
