"idle" makes perfect sense to me... listen to the first verse and chorus, he's expressing fear of his partner growing/evolving and leaving him behind. |

nsteele has a good point. I have definitely heard this song differently depending on how my relationship is going with the wife. On a bad day I might assume that their life together is slowly destroying them. On a better day I may see it bringing them together - kind of an us vs the world kind of thing. Either way, its up to them to make it work or not. Berninger did a good job of setting it up that way in the song, bc it really can (and does) go either way. |

This song is about feeling trapped. There are tons of songs/books/movies/ladies room conversations about women being trapped by marriage/family. This is from a husband's perspective. That situation definitely goes both ways, men just tend not to discuss it as much - which is what makes song cool. Springsteen has some good songs about this topic too, specifically The River comes to mind. |
