This song is basically about Scott and his wife having disagreements. There are multiple words used in this song that describe "the splitting of one thing into two separate parts". It has to be Mary's book that seems to have inspired a good part of this song... "Take A Rest, Or Take A Ravel In The Light Of Lights".... "Ravel" means becoming undone. When writing the book Mary went too far by telling Scott's personal struggles... Therefore that's something Scott can't easily forgive and ruins a chance of them being "together" again.... "Light Of Lights" is a reference to stepping on a stage to announce something to everyone. That would be Mary's book, kind of a tell all type thing... "But them tall tell teasers keep sneaking in my show tonight"... That could be saying that Mary and her friends continue taking advantage of Scott's name and his fame by going to his shows and being apart of his success and limelight, even though they run his name and reputation into the ground when given the chance. "Dichotomy" is something divided into two separate parts. That's Scott referring to what their marriage is or will soon become. Hickory might have a personal meaning with Scott or Mary... Or it could just be that Scott wanted another word to throw in front of "dichotomy" to help the rest of the words flow easier with the music. |

To me a lot of the No.4 album sounds like Scott is getting personal feelings off his chest about divorcing his wife around this time. The lyrics on this song come across to me that he is just releasing more of his thoughts towards his ex, or soon to be ex... "She don't like the way she smiles", that could be Scott saying that his wife wasn't happy with anything during that time. The next line, "He don't like the way she smiles" that could be a simple acknowledgement of another guy that he thinks/knows she is messing around with. The rest of the lines seem like common things that are said in arguments... "No you don't get it". |

I believe this song is full of debates, conversations, and arguments between he and his wife which are leading to their divorce. "You don't get it, no, you won't forget" I believe he is telling her that she has everything she could ask for with him, but for some reason she feels like she's never satisfied, and feels the need to go complicate things when she gets bored. Scott has probably tried telling her, that when she gets bored she goes and messes around with other people... So he's now saying, "So you're better off just leave it alone" Scott probably has noticed that other men are always attracted to his wife. She probably flirts with them at times when Scott is there to see... "And the dogs came in, Just to see her smile". Dogs is a reference to other men in general who flirt with his wife. Men flock to his wife at any given time, even if it's just to see her smile. "If you don't stop thinkin', Soon you will be drinkin'" She is constantly playing around with idea's of leaving Scott. Scott notices when she is distracted and thinking about things a little too much. So he's just predicting her every little move at this point. The last part, is Scott saying he's using drugs as a way to deal with his pain. His Mom might be the only lady figure in his life who he still trusts... "Coming Down, Mom I'm still healing". He's coming down off of a high. Maybe his Mom tried getting in touch with him at the time he's trying to ease his pain... |
