This song was included on an 8tracks mix dedicated to people who struggle with their body image, or have an ED, so I was skewed to think of an ED-related interpretation before I even heard the song...and I still definitely see bits that seem to refer to an ED. I think of this song as having a darker, read-between-the-lines meaning/perspective. The lyrics sound as if the singer had an ED, and got into recovery and managed to come back from it, and now she's stronger through the experience. On the other hand, the words could very well be spoken from the point of view of someone who's so far gone that they think their eating disorder is their friend and supports them. "What I thought would destroy me leaves me stronger in its wake" to me sounds like she realized she was spiraling out of control and worried about it at first, but has lost herself so much that she's not even afraid anymore, welcomes the ED into her life, and thinks she's a stronger woman. Again, my interpretation is very biased, but that's my take on it. Beautiful song, in both composition and execution. |

| The Fray – How To Save A Life Lyrics | 15 years ago |

" Step one, you say, "We need to talk" He walks, you say, "Sit down, it's just a talk" " He's telling his friend that he should listen to what he has to say for once. He's trying to explain that what his friend is doing is wrong. I think its drugs. " He smiles politely back at you You stare politely right on through " The friend and you are both trying to be polite when really its a hard for both of you. " Some sort of window to your right As he goes left and you stay right Between the lines of fear and blame You begin to wonder why you came " I don't think its a real window. Maybe a path that his friend is taking, when he's going the right way. And the fear and blame is their feelings, and finnaly he thinks "Why did I come? He will never listen. It will always be the same. " Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend somewhere along in the bitterness And I would have stayed up with you all night Had I known how to save a life " I think he might be the father of the boy and he's thinking how did I raise him wrong? Or was a bad friend? Then he lost someone he needed when the boy turned bitter. He says he would have stayed up all night talking to him and helping him, but really he doesn't know how to help. " Let him know that you know best Because after all, you do know best " I think he's being sarcastic to the father/main person. " Lay down a list of what is wrong Things you told him all along Pray to God he hears you And pray to God he hears you " Telling him its wrong, and its things that you've always said. Then you pray that he listens. " As he begins to raise his voice You lower yours and grant him one last choice " The friend starts to yell things like, "Its none of you buisness, etc" and you just listen. I think you get the rest! Thats my interpretation. :) |
