Emilie Autumn – Swallow Lyrics 15 years ago
Can I just say: I think it's so funny how she says, 'All of my songs/Sound pretty much the fucking same' when EA is definitely the most diverse musical artist I know? XD Every song is insanely different from all the others!!

Evanescence – Good Enough Lyrics 15 years ago
I made a comment on my impression of the song before, but it just keeps coming back to me, so I'll now make my own personal analysis of the lyrics (sorry if it bores you)! :)

*Under your spell again
I can't say no to you*

This is a kind of resigned acknowledgement of the strange effect that he has on her, indicating that he has enchanted her and now she can't do anything about it. The melody line suggests a kind of dark humour to me, but that's debatable.

*Crave my heart and its bleeding in your hand
I can't say no to you*

Another poignant reflection on the lengths to which she will go for this person. Whatever he wants, it's as good as done, even if it means great personal sacrifice.

*Shouldn't have let you torture me so sweetly
now I can't let go of this dream
I can't breathe but I feel*

She knows it's wrong. She shouldn't have let him torture her, tantalise her with his charms into falling for him, but it was so irresistable that she didn't really mind, just had some kind of vague notion that she was doing something wrong. And now, it's gone a little too far, and she can't let go of her crush, her love. Once again, it feels bad ("I can't breathe") but finally...

*Good enough
I feel good enough for you*

Finally, she's come to terms with it. She feels like she can live up to him, look him in the eye, and maybe even tell him. She finally feels good enough that she thinks she has a chance with him.

*Drink up sweet decadence
I can't say no to you*

It's destroying her, she's drinking in the destruction, the decay. But once again, she's just too... almost obsessed, but in a good, gentle way.

*And I've completely lost myself and I don't mind
I can't say no to you*

She's lost herself in this obsession, and she knows she has, but it's just too sweet, just too good for her to bring herself to do anything about it.

*Shouldn't have let you conquer me completely
now I can't let go of this dream
can't believe that I feel*

Similar feelings as before, along with a sort of disbelieving triumph.

*Good enough
I feel good enough
its been such a long time coming, but I feel good*

*and I'm still waiting for the rain to fall
pour real life down on me*

She's still waiting for rain (symbolising reason, and cool logic) to make her realise that she doesn't really have a chance, that she's being stupid. To wake her up, really, and see the truth.

*cause I can't hold on to anything this good
enough
am I good enough
for you to love me too?*

Even though she feels good enough, she has to question if she really is, and she's expecting any moment to come to the sudden realisation that she can't hold on to anything that good, that it would come to nothing. But it hasn't come.

*so take care what you ask of me
cause I can't say no*

A bit of a plea to her love, for him to be gentle and not too harsh on her.

Sorry for the long post. Amazing song, love it!

I think this is about a crush, and how she just can't let go of it. It destroyed her for a while, but finally, she learned to accept it and finally feels 'good enough'. She knows it's bad, that it's not good for her (decadence) but it makes her feel so happy and she doesn't mind that she's lost herself.

Still, even while accepting it for what it is and not agonising over her feelings, she can't help wonder if she really is good enough and if she can keep it.

Well, 'Best Safety Lies in Fear' was originally from Hamlet...
But EA did use it. And as it's EA, forgiven. :)

Avril Lavigne – How Does It Feel Lyrics 15 years ago
I know this isn't why it was originally written, and I won't be too popular for bringing classics into pop songs, but this song really reminds me of Catherine Earnshaw from Wuthering Heights.

The verses are about her mindset, and how she's 'not afraid of anything' (she's a proud, strong-headed girl) but then suddenly, she dies of illness.

The reason this struck me was because there are lots of references in the book about how Heathcliff and Cathy are one and the same (e.g. 'I am Heathcliff', 'I cannot live without my life') and it makes me think of Cathy in death, wondering how it feels to him to be separated and different from one another for the first time.

Make of that what you will... :)
