Viewing some of these comments makes me want to stab myself in the eyes. Stop trying to take blind shots in the dark at the meaning of music you clearly don't understand. Stop telling us your feelings about this song, either you know what it's about or you don't. If your just commenting on this song alone then your dumb because the whole album operates on an underlying theme. Many people waste time labeling this as solely satanist, or religious, or condoning murder. Blixer isn't necessarily eluding to these elements with a positive spin. There's a very finite line here, either you know what this song is about or you don't.
This song (whole album for that matter) is over-using religious dialect and mythical symbolism in an attempt to illustrate the ridiculousness of clinging onto centuries-old ideas which have zero value in our society today.
I think Blixer's writing is genius period, but it's especially clear on this song. You have artists that bring up these elements of reality in songs but never this blunt and detailed and pushing the lines of acceptability. It's almost as if the Mars Volta are trying to evolve the art of music. From 3-4 minute verse,chorus,verse,chorus generic crap that's still biting off the 90's alternative movement.

I don't know if there are any students checking this out right now, but I have some advice if there are. If you have a poetry or song analysis project then I recommend using this song. All you would really have to say is that your prefer art explained in blunt detail as oppose to cryptic metaphor. That should be all you have to say in order to get you top marks. You may have to fuzz out that figurative(lol) n bomb in the middle though. Save it for a big assignment though because it'll require you to print like 500 pages of encyclopedia articles. |
