| Florence + the Machine – Girl with One Eye Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I'm not sure whether I think this is a lesbian relationship or a male and female, but I'll go with the latter; "She told me not to step on the cracks I told her not to fuss and relax" Basically it's the girl's first time having sex, and the boy's reassuring her that it won't hurt and not to fuss, etc. "Well, her pretty little face stopped me in my tracks" He was entranced by the sweet and innocent girl in the beginning, "But now she sleeps with one eye open That's the price she paid" She's wary of boys now because of what happened, and it's the price she paid for believing what the boy said. "I took a knife and cut out her eye I took it home and watched it wither and die" By this I think he means he opened her eyes so she's no longer naive to the dangers of the world, dangers such as the boy. "Well, she's lucky that I didn't slip her a smile That's why she sleeps with one eye open That's the price she paid" Not really sure about this part xD "I said, hey, girl with one eye Get your filthy fingers out of my pie" The girl's come back to him for more, but he's feeling guilty now and he's telling her to back off, because he doesn't want anything to do with her anymore. He feels ashamed for what he's done, and she's been molded into another person since she's had her eyes open (her eye cut out). "I said, hey, girl with one eye I'll cut your little heart out cause you made me cry" The boy's still adamant that he doesn't want it, and their roles are pretty much reversed from what they were in the beginning of the song. The girl's dialogue is the 'cut your little heart out' bit, and she's telling him he'll pay for he's done to her. "I slipped my hand under her skirt I said don't worry, it's not gonna hurt" See, this is where I think it's the lesbian bit. It would make more sense, to me at least, if the person who took her virginity was a girl, because at this point it could be the girl with one eye taking out her revenge and doing exactly the same thing to the other girl as what happened in the beginning, and by quoting what the girl said to her when they first decided to have sex, it just makes it scarier. It could work the same for a boy and a girl, but the skirt bit is iffy, unless it's really just the boy repeating what was said at the start. "Oh, my reputation's kinda clouded with dirt That's why you sleep with one eye open That's the price you paid" The girl with one eye got her revenge in the end. :) |

| Temposhark – Not that big Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I think a part of it is about denial, like the constant repetition of 'you're not big in my life'. They're trying to tell themselves that this person they used to love (who hurt them) isn't a big part of their life, that they didn't really love them fully, that they've gotten over them. "I can cut my heart out just like you do And I can suck the life out of it just like you do" This person who has been hurt is capable of doing the same thing -- they're not weak. "I'm gonna pick myself up and pull myself together; never revel in recovery mode" They're telling themselves they can get over it, that that person wasn't a big deal to them. "You're not that big..." |

| Marina and the Diamonds – I Am Not a Robot Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I think it's someone singing to their friend who constantly has a hard exterior, that never shows any emotion much like a robot would, never admitting their feelings and hiding their true self. The friend is trying to tell them it's okay to break down and cry every once or so often, and tell people how you really feel instead of hiding behind something and pretending you're okay, because that's what humans do, and they're telling their friend to say 'I am not a robot' as means of building their confidence. | |
| OutKast – Roses (feat. Big Boi) Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
Caroline, i.e. a gold-digging bitch. Literally, a bitch. Not really any sexism here. She always gets what she wants and what she wants is the best, and so she would refuse to work out anything unless it was on a golden calculator (the best), but the 'golden calculator' line could really just mean you'd need a really good calculator to coax her into believing the truth, that everyone thinks she is a bitch, which she is. "Oh so you're one them freaks, get geeked at the sight of ATM receipts" A freak as in she's a gold-digger, and she gets terribly excited if she sees a boy who has withdrawn a lot of money from an ATM and will pursue him immediately. Sure she's attractive on the outside but on the inside she's a horrible -- again -- a /bitch/. "A neat place sleep, a rent-a-car for a week, a trick for a treat" She won't actually committ herself to anything until she's certain she is getting what she thinks she is getting, as in being showered with what she wants. "What happens when the dough get so low Bitch, you ain't that fine" And when the money runs out, her true personality is exposed. She really isn't that fine as people make her out to be. |

| Elton John – Rocket Man Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I think it's just about a man going through a break-up with his wife. It's open to interpretation, but this is what I think: "She packed my bags last night pre-flight Zero hour nine a.m. And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then" His wife packing a suitcase for him as she kicks him out, straightaway in the morning. The high bit -- him drinking in his sorrows of losing her? "I miss the earth so much I miss my wife It's lonely out in space On such a timeless flight" 'I miss my wife' literally means he misses her, truly. Whatever he's done, if he's cheated on her whatever, he really regrets it and feels so guilty, but he can't go back to her now because she doesn't love him anymore. He's lonely and realises he shouldn't have done what he did. Time passes by slowly because he doesn't know what to do anymore. "And I think it's gonna be a long long time Till touch down brings me round again to find" It's going to be a long time until he gets over her, and until she gets over him, before they can come to any sort of start-over. "I'm not the man they think I am at home Oh no no no I'm a rocket man Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone" Obviously his wife's family will think of him as a piece of trash now, for whatever he did (which I think is most likely having a fling with someone else). He's saying he's not that man that did those things and he's really sorry. He's got no one to love now; he's getting through life on his own (burning out his fuse up here alone). "Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids In fact it's cold as hell And there's no one there to raise them if you did" I think this is about his kids being cold towards him because of what he did to their mother. They visit, but the place he is staying is in poor condition and it's not a good place for them to be, really, as he's drinking and trying to cope with it all. "And all this science I don't understand It's just my job five days a week A rocket man, a rocket man" He doesn't know how to cope without her, without his family. He just tries to get through it all, grinning and bearing it. He's a 'rocket man' -- to others he looks great and happy, but he's really not. "And I think it's gonna be a long long time... " Just him saying how long it will take for everything to blow over, until everything will be peaceful again. |

| Editors – Eat Raw Meat = Blood Drool Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
Judging on the music video, I'd say this song is simply about how corrupt governments can become [are] and how they do not really care for us, but are using us to their advantage. In the video there's a part with a man speaking on a podium, but being controlled by a twisted looking creature in the same fashion one would control a puppet, which literally means that the speaker is a puppet to someone elses' string -- a figurehead. As it zooms out there are two statues of owls, and if I'm not mistaken the owl is a prominent symbol for the 'New World Order', a theme which runs throughout the whole video. Looking at the lyrics I can see it clearer now. "I don't wanna be left out, or get fucked. but there's a talent in your lies. If you're chewing with an open mouth, raw meat, your blood drool attracts the flies." The government have a good way of covering up their tracks, don't they? They have a talent in lying to the people and telling them what they want to hear, so they no longer feel left out or neglected. Back to the video, it's really basically about the New World Order conspiracy. In the beginning, creatures are taken straight from the womb and placed on a conveyer belt, and pills are fed to them and forced down with a bottle of something that has a poison symbol on it. The next time they are shown, they are being shown a TV, and their eyes are being removed. Their eyes being removed, to me, is showing how the government are leaving them literally blind to all the wrong they are doing, all the corruption they are spreading, and these creatures are not aware of this, because they are literally blind. No doubt what they are watching on the TV before their eyes are removed is propaganda for whatever government is in charge. Brainwashing. Again, the next time we see them they are being given cigarettes, and not surprisingly the cigarettes are lit with a lighter in the shape of an OWL. I think the cigarettes pretty much resemble any luxuries, and the government are happy to dumb down the masses with whatever they wish as long as it will keep them quiet. The demented Mickey Mouse is probably just a hint towards how governments (or at least the government in this video) have used a friendly figurehead to win the hearts of the people, and of course Mickey Mouse is completely innocent, but in regards to the governments sinister idea behind it all, Mickey's shown as a demon, while standing on the star of David. At the end of the video, one creature manages to break free from the routine brainwashing, and finds a pair of eyes, giving him his sight back. This opens up his eyes, literally, and he sees what the government is doing. Out of the excitement he has for realising he could be free, or maybe just pure terror at what is happening, the little chap runs out of the building, hoping to see other people who have escaped the brainwashing like himself, but what does he find? Nothing. There is nothing to see. The ending gives me two different interpretations. Either the government has taken away everything on the outside world and left nothing for anyone else, or there's been some sort of massive war fought between the government and an unknown other. Obviously it's caused so much destruction that the people who are being brainwashed are probably better off, in a dark sense, and happier that they do not know what is going on in the outside world. Well, that's my two cents, but I'm 14 and I don't think I've got it all right, but it's my interpretation. :-) |

| B.o.B – Nothin' On You Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| It isn't hard to see what this song's about: just a guy singing his love for a girl, and how although he's been known as a bit of a flirt in the past he's promising to her that he won't fool around with her. | |
| David Bowie – Life on Mars? Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I'm not so sure about the whole meaning of this song, but I think this song is about a naive girl, kicked out into the wilds of society and entranced by all the good and bad things in the world. "Take a look at the lawman Beating up the wrong guy" This is what it sounds like; society, corrupt and wrong. She sees a lawyer prosecuting an innocent, while the criminal gets away. "Is there life on Mars?" Perhaps she is wondering if, there was life on Mars, if the society there would be the same as ours, or maybe she's just literally asking if there is life on different planets, totally opposite of our species. "It's on America's tortured brow That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow" I think this is about show-business and media. 'America's tortured brow' to me means that America is always full of conspiracies, shocks and horrors, constantly in the eye of the media, and so it's a personification of America, saying that America's fed up of being in the spotlight for everything bad all the time. Again, I'm not too sure about the rest of the lines, but the use of the word 'cavemen' to me seems like Bowie is almost referring to the stupidity of our race, and how unruly we truly are. |

| System of a Down – Chop Suey! Lyrics | 14 years ago |

I, myself, think it's about Jesus calling out to God. I'm not religious, but after hearing a part from Matthew's Gospel in assembly today, I was immediately reminded of this song. The school chaplin read out a part that said when Jesus was crucified, he was calling out to God, saying, "my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?". Now we all know that the line "why have you forsaken me" is in this song, obviously. Another line that stands out for me is the bit where he's saying "father, father". Jesus calling out to God, you see. The "commend my spirit" part and the "angels deserve to die" part also hint to me it's about Jesus on the cross, but it's open for any interpretation of course. |

| Cake Bake Betty – Eleanor Lyrics | 15 years ago |

It's most likely about Monmouth in Wales. "cross the river to the tower" -- the River Wye meets the River Monnow in Monmouth, and it has two bridges over both which you can cross. Since she mentions Monmouth itself, it's probably about the place in Wales. |
