Franz Ferdinand – Stand on the Horizon Lyrics 12 years ago
The following article, "Franz Ferdinand singer's tribute to South Shields" was published in The Shields Gazette in England, 30 August 2013, by Vicki Newman (Twitter: @shieldsgazvicki)
http://www.shieldsgazette.com/what-s-on/music/franz-ferdinand-singer-s-tribute-to-south-shields-1-5999378

INDIE-rockers Franz Ferdinand have paid tribute to South Shields on their new album.

Well-known spots like South Shields Metro station and Marsden Rock are mentioned in the track, Stand On The Horizon, which is on the album Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action, which was released on Monday.

The link with South Tyneside comes from singer Alex Kapranos, who spent his early years living in the town.

The 41-year-old was born in Gloucestershire, but moved to his mother’s native South Shields shortly after, living in the town until he moved to Scotland at the age of seven.

Although Alex wasn’t in South Shields when he penned Stand On The Horizon, he said he was thinking of it.

The lyrics say: ‘In South Shields Metro station, I heard Marsden Rock was breaking, the North Sea shaking, All that we know, to make us see the point of living is to live, So won’t you come to me’.

Alex said: “The song is about how we navigate through our lives via familiar landmarks. These can be places or people.

“They seem permanent and we understand where we are by our relationship to them.

“If they are changed in some way or disappear, it makes us reassess our place in life. We have to think about where we are standing.

“When Marsden Rock collapsed in the ‘90s, it was a moment like that for me. It was a very familiar landmark that I’d known all my life.

“When I was a kid, I used to walk up to it when the tide was out, and walk under the arch to make a wish.

“Suddenly half of it wasn’t there any more. This mighty rock was broken by the power of the North Sea. The coastline wasn’t the same.”

“It’s a metaphor for those other landmarks in our lives.

“I vividly remember the last time I visited my grandfather in South Shields and standing in the Metro station on my way there.

“When he died, it felt like a huge rock by which I navigated my life had disappeared.

“The landscape suddenly feels empty and unrecognisable. You have to reassess where you are.

“The words came very naturally, as I knew what I wanted to say. It’s often like that if you’re writing about a vivid sensation.”

Alex also told the Gazette that it’s uncertain if the song will be released as a single, but it is a contender.

He said if a video was filmed for Stand On The Horizon, it would be fun to shoot it in South Shields.

The singer, who has released three other albums with Franz Ferdinand, still has family members in the town.

He said: “My nana still lives in South Shields and there are quite a few members of the extended Kapranos family kicking about too.

“I do like to go back for a visit. Last time I was there I was with my girlfriend and I took her and my nana to The Grotto to watch the waves crashing against the rock.

“I have particularly good memories of summer days on the beach, looking for crabs and jumping into the sea.”

Justin Young (Vaccines' frontman) said this about "Somebody Else's Child"
"I think you should always put your best songs on a record but this didn’t really work stylistically so we decided to make it a hidden track."

The Vaccines – Family Friend Lyrics 14 years ago
In an interview, Pete Robertson (Vaccines' drummer) was asked if he had a favorite song to play live. He mentioned "If You Wanna" and also said the following...

Pete: I really like playing ‘Family Friend’, the last song on the album. We actually don’t do that song a lot. We play it when we feel like it. It’s quite different from the rest of the album. It’s difficult to pull off live because it’s quite sparse and very slow at the top, and then ends up going a little crazy.

Interviewer: ‘Family Friend’ almost feels like a b-side. It is a notably different style of song from the rest of What Did You Expect? and it feels like a track that you were playing around with in the studio, that you all liked enough to add to the other eleven songs on the album.

Pete: Yes, that’s not far off. We spent a while in the studio with that one. It kind of took a few goes to get it right, because it’s kind of a spontaneous thing the way it speeds up and the way the guitar in it builds. We wound up waiting to do that song until really late in the recording process. That was an all-nighter that we pulled and we had a few drinks beforehand and just tried to relax into that song when we recorded it. So we’ll do that song live when we feel the setting is right. It’s kind of a special thing for us.

The Vaccines – Under Your Thumb Lyrics 14 years ago
Also, I think the lyric "European sun" is a reference to the Velvet Underground song "European Son" though it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the meaning of that song. In an old interview, Jay Jay Pistolet (Justin Young) said he loved the Velvet Underground & Nico album.

The Vaccines – Post Break-Up Sex Lyrics 14 years ago
Justin Young (Vaccines' frontman) said this about "Post Break-Up Sex"
"This song is pretty self-explanatory. I remember writing it on my bed and wanting it to be as simple as possible. It’s exactly numb."

He also said, "I guess the song Post Breakup Sex is pretty self explanatory, really. I guess it just deals, in quite simple way, with the emotions that one goes through when they have sex with someone else for the first time after splitting up with someone, or even having sex with that person again. And yah, it kinda feels sh**, doesn't it."

The Vaccines – Wreckin' Bar (Ra Ra Ra) Lyrics 14 years ago
Seconded about it being a night out with a posh girl ("well brought up; royal blue"), since "ra ra" is British slang for that kind of girl, as in "she's a bit ra ra."

Urban dictionary gives a good definition, saying this upper class type is called that cos it sounds like "ra ra ra" when they laugh. http://ra-ra.urbanup.com/3219437

Jay Jay Pistolet – Friend, We Weren't Even Lovers Lyrics 14 years ago
Oh sorry, I just found the version you took the lyrics from and I can't delete my previous post. The first line I wrote above was from the live version on YouTube with Marcus Mumford.

I think he is saying:
"But I'm as yet to wipe you from my mind"
"It will take the fun of all that I don't got"

and the other lines above. Thanks for your post!

I think the first line is "Well if we're not going to live"

"Because I've rained and I've pined and I've cried"

"But I'm not set to wipe you from my mind" (?)

"Upon one I wished that what you have denied me was ours"

"It will take the for of all that I don't got" (?)
"Fulfill you in the ways I have not"

"And pray that your heart unlocks"

The Vaccines – All In White Lyrics 14 years ago
Justin (Vaccines' singer) said this about the song: "This is about jealousy and about victimising yourself. In retrospect, though, it says more about me than it does about other people."
(source: http://its-all-indie.blogspot.com/2011/06/single-review-vaccines-all-in-white.html)

He also said: "This is a song I had for a long time and we started playing it because we all like it. Hopefully its euphony."

Also the lyrics seemed to have morphed in their live show. On the youtube clip of the Sheffield show in Sept 2010 he sang:
"I will watch you rise on my back from afar,
Friend or foe, I don't know that you're up in the stars"

but in recent clips he has changed it to the other line "I will watch you rise on my back from the ground"

The Vaccines – All In White Lyrics 15 years ago
I think some of the above lyrics may be incorrect.

Instead of "I'll shine on a papal view"
I think he says "I'll shine on a faithful few" (sometimes he says "you faithful few")

Instead of "show me long quotations"
I think it's "show me low quotations"

Instead of "Help you and your strides"
It's "Have you earned your stripes?"

I can't quite hear the "little trouble" part
but it sounds a lot like "Brush my cause of silent little trouble"

Instead of "Oh my god I begged for a big bubble"
It's "Oh my god I think I'm hearing double"

Instead of "Friend, I don't know if you'll like what you've found."
It's "Friend or foe, I don't know, do you like what you found?"

The title line confuses me, it sounds exactly like "I was always wrong you all in white" but it makes no sense! I wondered if it was "I was always around you all in white" but it doesn't always sound like that.

If we agree on the lyrics maybe we can now figure out what they actually mean! ;)
I would love to know!
