Tom Paxton – Whose Garden Was This Lyrics 15 years ago
Folk songs change. I listen to at least two versions of this with only passing confusion.

As a teenager, I had a fondness for stories that were set beyond either nuclear holocaust or some other reason for modern civilization going the way of the ancient Romans. This song reminds me of these stories.

The land is dead, and child asks an elder to repeat again his stories of a lost world he has never seen, intent on the memories of a fading history.

Simon and Garfunkel – El Cóndor Pasa (If I Could) Lyrics 15 years ago
I thought the lyrics were that way too. Maybe it depends on which recording you're listening too. (I often stumble on different versions of songs, especially the more folksy singers.)

Genesis – Domino Lyrics 15 years ago
The first part sounds like a guy trying to get used to sleeping alone after having shared his bed with a woman for a while. It's like he blames her for whatever reason they're not together, and he's filled with regret at it.

The second part sounds like he's having some sort of nightmare. I'm not sure if there's a meaning or just drawing a picture. After the nightmare, he wakes up to an ugly world. There's still regret at her absence.

Oingo Boingo – Mary Lyrics 15 years ago
A story about a mundane woman learning to be independent could also be wedged into this song.

"Hands would sometimes bleed" might refer to holding down a job that is physically demanding. Her family rejects her when she comes back because she didn't settle down and be a subservient housewife. After being independent, she couldn't settle for such a life. Reading people's minds could refer to how getting used to a different society made her better able to understand body language. The mountain is overcoming the sheltered life.

Oingo Boingo – Glory Be Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm interested in the actual meaning, but here's my shot at interpreting. There's obvious religious tones with the communion and stigmata.

Perhaps the miracle transfiguration of water to wine is tied to how the wine transfigures into the blood of christ.

Perhaps it is a cry to want to be more like the messiah in some way. I've always found this song to be resigned instead of searching.
