| Oasis – Guess God Thinks I'm Abel Lyrics | 13 years ago |

This is such a sad song. Or at least it's always sounded really sad to me. We know it's about Noel, but regardless of Liam's intent - before I knew he'd said anything about it - I already pictured it as it being about two brothers. Knowing of his history with Noel, it just sounded really tragic to me. I'm not saying this applies to Liam and Noel (it most certainly doesn't), but I've also always thought the song sounded rather incestual. "I could be your lover", anyone? I'm not saying this is how he meant it, but it's what it sounds like to me. Like someone who's in love with his brother, but their relationship is too turbulent, and he'll never get what he wants out of it - hence "guess God thinks I'm Abel", because fate seems to want him and his brother to fight forever, and everything about his brother metaphorically kills him. Of course, Noel had to go and make a crack: "Liam's gotten all religious. It's quite disturbing. He thinks he's Abel for some weird reason. He wrote a new song called "Guess God Thinks I'm Abel." And I thought, "Right, so you think you're Abel. That must make me Cain. Doesn't Cain kill Abel?" But then the first line of that song is "You could be my lover." I'm not too sure about that. That's illegal, innit? It's kind of illegal for two brothers to make love. It's certainly frowned upon." |

| Neutral Milk Hotel – Song Against Sex Lyrics | 13 years ago |

I don't think locking the doors was a reference to killing the other person. I think he means to kill himself, and mentions locking the door as an ironically casual remark, which contrasts to his state of mind. Like, "don't worry, I'll remember to lock your door on my way out to kill myself", because he thinks the other person wouldn't care about his well being. That's the impression I got, anyway. And I don't think he's just sad because people have loveless sex, I think he's particularly hurt about the other person he went home with not caring about him. He seems to be rather excited about their kiss in the first verse, everything sounded electric. And then he was disappointed because the sex was "too far away from anything we could call loving". And he says "all the looks of love were staged". Sex was nothing like he imagined, it was pretense. So he contemplates suicide yet again, because there's nothing worth living for. |

Interesting, that's exactly how I feel. Thought I'd be alone in that. I first heard this song years ago, but it came back to haunt me these last few days. It was just stuck in my head and I had to listen to it again. I don't know why, but it reminds me a lot of that famous James Dean picture, where he's walking down the street on some rainy day. I think I may have been looking at it or thinking of it when I first heard the song, I don't know. They certainly share a theme of loneliness. And they're very connected in my heart. I can't think of one and not the other. I just listen to the song and this image of a lonely James Dean pops up in my head. It makes me really sad. |

| George Michael – Father Figure Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I'm sorry if this offends people so much, but this song does sound as if it were narrated by a man in love with a child, or at least someone much younger. Doesn't the part about, well, a FATHER FIGURE give you a hint? Or that their love may be seen as a crime by those who don't understand it? It's obvious there's a great power imbalance, seen as the presumably older person is posing as the younger's father ("I'll be your daddy"). But truly, the reason why he would do that is because he wants his beloved to be happy, and thinks he or she wants/needs to be protected and guided by, well, a father figure. Their relationship is still obviously sexual, hence the bits about being naked, but it's also much more intense, as it's that of a mentor and its pupil. It sounds even incestual, although it must be noted that it probably isn't (it's a father figure, not the actual father), but due to the age difference it might have this connotation. Judgments aside, it's an interesting story, and not so uncommon in real life relationships. And NOT just gay ones either, so don't get all defensive. | |
