To me this song is about hiding from happiness by remaining in a bad relationship... "Happiness hit her like a train on a track Coming towards her stuck still no turning back She hid around corners and she hid under beds She killed it with kisses and from it she fled With every bubble she sank with her drink And washed it away down the kitchen sink" - She killed any happiness by staying in denial because she loves the person she's with, took to drinking to deal with the pain of the relationship. "Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers Leave all your love and your longing behind You cant carry it with you if you want to survive The dog days are over The dog days are done Can you hear the horses? Because here they come" - The running I think indicates running from the relationship for the sake of yourself and your family. The "leave all your love and your longing behind" line I think means leaving any love you had for your spouse, because you won't be able to get out if you hold on to that feeling. (Been there, so I'm pretty sure that's what she's talking about.) And the dog days are over line I think means that she's finally free of the shit relationship. "And I never wanted anything from you Except everything you had and what was left after that too, oh" - And this line I'm pretty sure is about how controlling the spouse was. Just my take on it. :) |
