This song is ultimately about loss. My interpretation of this song is that she has been left by the person who she believed was her soul mate. When the relationship ends she is surprised because she was so sure of their love. the unsuspected end has left her in shock and she finds herself lost and feeling a sense of instability because everything she thought she knew is wrong. She fervently believed in this love and the ending has caused her to lose her sense of stability in life causing her to doubt everything. After being broken up with she feels insignificant to him causing her to wonder "who am I to say you love me?" Unable to move on she is lost in the hope of reconciliation even though time has passed and she knows he will not be returning. Towards the end she has finally begone to heal and can reflect positively about him. |

The songs makes me think they may be married and see each other but have to make their encounters look like pure chance to avoid causing suspicions. This portion makes me think he had an affair was caught and his wife subsequently left him. (Lord, how long have I got to keep on running, Seven hours, seven days or seven years? This section seems like he is doing all that he can to avoid his feelings. (I wish that I could hold you One more time to ease the pain, But my time's run out and I got to go, Got to run away again) This section makes me think he has issues with commitment and is a coward and runs from his relationships By asking for one more embrace it seems that he does love her but just cant stay. Feels like I'm drowning, Drowning in the river. Lord, how long must this go on?) I feel he wants to go back to her and she will take him back and some how forgive and make him over come his tendency to run away from relationships. He seems to have a lot of self loathing and doesn't want to be the way he is. |

(All their illusions, I wont believe them I'll always believe what I can't forget cause all of their reasons They keep on changing) The above portion seems to be about how a person can be lied to and how people can try to manipulate you. The line about believing what he cant forget seems to be about a painful life lesson he learned, and not wanting to repeat that mistake. (Well I'd trade wisdom back in for innocence to get away from all my lies I'd trade wisdom back in for innocence to get away from getting by I'd trade wisdom back in for innocence for just one look through those eyes.) Wishing back his innocence seems to mean that he would rather not have gained the knowledge he has acquired from painful life lessons and that he would rather go back to being naive. He would give all that he has learned from life back just to be an innocent person that isn't jaded by life. |
