Saves the Day – Nightingale Lyrics 14 years ago
This is mine and my fiances song. We currently are living 1300 miles apart but every night he either puts me on speaker phone or on Skype gets out his acoustic guitar and sings this song to me. I think this song is so sweet and is absolutely my favorite song by Saves the Day.

Good Old War – That's Some Dream Lyrics 15 years ago

That's Some Dream
Schwartz: This was one of those songs that woke me up in the middle of the night. It forced me to write it so I don't know if I can even take credit. Life is precious and short, and I don't want to waste one minute of it. That's the basic meaning of the lyrics. I also write a lot of songs that deal with the subject of love, and this was one time I wanted to keep it a little more vague. It's hard to remember since it all happened really fast, but I immediately had high hopes for the song. It's been great that people seem to really connect with this one because I almost feel like I didn't even write it. As far as the music goes, I was again going for really simple. I like to take chords that are very basic and find a melody in them without even changing them at all. This is the perfect example of that working out right.

Good Old War – World Watching Lyrics 15 years ago
World Watching
Goodwin: This was one of the first songs we ever worked on. We didn't get it together for the first album, so we made sure it made it onto this one. Dan’s guitar part alone does it for me. It has a half-strummed, half-fingerpicked feel. The groove feels good throughout. Lyrically, the song is about realizing that what we do right now will have an affect on what is to come--even the things you do when no one else is around to see. The song is loaded with harmony and has a really sweet drum break at the end.

Good Old War – Thinkin of You Lyrics 15 years ago

Thinking Of You
Goodwin: This is tagged onto the end of “I Should Go.” I had the melody overlap with the last word of that song. It’s created to feel the way I would if I was going home without the girl I love. Late one night, I built a vocal arrangement with more than 12 vocal tracks. Later, Dan and Tim sang some of the lines and as time went on, more instruments were added. It’s very mellow with a lot of reverb.

Good Old War – Old Lyrics 15 years ago
Old
Schwartz: This was a ditty I wrote on the ukulele that just had this really cool, snake-like quality about it. It seemed like something we could turn into a great interlude, so we did. This was also a bit of an ode to the way Tim dances. He has this funny dance he does, and I wanted a piece of music that would suit that perfectly. That's why it's called "Old." He's the subject of this one-line song. The interludes on the album were a great creative outlet for us. We all really let each other try any idea we wanted. Trust is something that can go a long way for a band.

Good Old War – Sneaky Louise Lyrics 15 years ago
Sneaky Louise
Goodwin: This is a song very close to my heart. It sounds like a happy tune, but anytime someone comes up to me at a show and asks me why I wrote it, I start to tear up when I'm telling them. My best friend growing up is hooked on Oxycontin and is more than $25,000 in debt to her family between what she's stolen from them and what they've put into rehab. The worst part is that she doesn't understand how she is affecting her family and friends and she's still using. No, her name is not Louise. I also lost a family member in a similar situation three years ago and it still hurts--not to mention the 20 other friends I had from high school that are all heading in the same direction. I wouldn't normally write about this, but it seems to be haunting me. How do we help them? Musically, this song has a classic pop sound. It has a great 12-string [guitar] part throughout. The end has gang vocals representing the millions of people who have loved ones are addicts singing, "Why is it so hard for you to believe in what we are saying?"

Good Old War – While I'm Away Lyrics 15 years ago

While I'm Away
Goodwin: I basically thought of all of the things I say to my wife on the phone when I'm on tour and put it in a song. This was the last song written for the album. I really wanted the song to feel like a Yann Tiersen arrangement at first, so I asked Dan to play several rhythms at once on the guitar and he did. It’s one of my favorite guitar parts on the album. Tim’s beat is full of ghost notes--which I love--and the vocal arrangement might be the most complex of them all.
