Mika – Dr. John Lyrics 14 years ago
I believe that some of the others were on the right track when they said Dr. John was referring to his drugs, but I believe it's more specifically about a man being pelted with one-night-stand upon one-night-stand who is turning to alcoholism and trying to find out where he went wrong.

(I look for joy in a strange place
From the back of a bar, from afar
See the look on my momma's face
When her son's in the corner, undone)

He's trying to find solace in his pick-ups, but knows he's not likely to find anything. His loved ones try to support him but he turns them away.

(Oh, Dr. Johhhhn
What am I doing?
What am I doing wrong?
'Cause I keep on trying
Something ain't going
Something ain't going on)

He tries to turn to alcohol (Dr. John - Jack Daniels) to help "cure" him and find the right path in his life, which he realizes is less than ideal. He acknowledges that no matter what he does, he can't seem to find happiness in what he's doing right now.

You can tell that it's not just alcoholism, but a combination of that and a history of one-night-stands from some of the other lines. "Another day, another break-up" in particular. But that's just my take on it.

Harvey Danger – War Buddies Lyrics 15 years ago
However, when I did tell my friends about it, I always make sure to give a proper shout-out to TheTANK up a few comments from here. The one who made up the "war as a metaphor for love as a metaphor for war" line.

I remember back when I first heard this song I would go around to all my friends explaining that it was "a song about war disguised as a song about sex disguised as a song about war." I'd say that pretty much sums it up right there.

It starts off with him making cheeky sexual innuendo based around the topic - "I'll be the atheish in your foxhole," "If you've got guns, well now's the time for sticking." However, as you listen to it closer, these start to turn back around on themselves into a serious discussion. I feel it is one of the more powerful anti-war songs out there, and am upsetted a little that it didn't get the popularity it deserves.

Linkin Park – Waiting For The End Lyrics 15 years ago
This "that was just a lie" theory also is supported by most of the song's verses. Mainly the "It's hard to let you go" line. It seems to be separate from the opening part though, in both lyricism and style. So I'm not sure what that part would mean in the context of the rest of the song.

I don't have a very strong opinion on what exactly the song in itself is about. I just wanted to point out some potential hidden meaning behind one of the lines that I really liked.

To me, the line "I know what it takes to move on" seems hopeful, a statement that shows progress in dealing with whatever the singer is talking about (be it nucler holocaust, lost love, etc.). However, the line after that, "I know how it feels to lie," has a different context. The way that he says it makes it feel almost as though he hiding something. As if he's saying "I can get over this... By the way, that last thing was a lie."

This has been used sometimes less subtly before in other songs, more recently AAR's "Gives You Hell," and like I said, I just wanted to share what I thought was the process behind that line. I really enjoy the song, and feel its a nice change from some other of the band's songs. To me, Linkin Park seems like one of those bands that has a new sound with every single album. But they never are boring, they always have a sound that is strictly theirs and easily recognizable as a Linkin Park piece.
