Mumford & Sons – The Cave Lyrics 15 years ago
It seems a good portion of their lyrics are inspired by literature - so this wouldn't exactly be a stretch.

"Sigh No More" - Shakespeare, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
"Roll Away Your Stone" - Shakespeare, MACBETH
"Timshel" - Steinbeck, EAST OF EDEN
"Dust Bowl Dance" - Steinbeck, GRAPES OF WRATH

"The Cave" - Plato??? perhaps.

Mumford & Sons – Timshel Lyrics 15 years ago
Not exactly. The use of Timshel in EAST OF EDEN refers to Genesis 4 where God either orders or promises Cain (symbolic of man) to become a master over sin (depending on your interpretation/translation of the Bible). The differing translations were of the King James and American Standard Bibles. The issue is debated by characters Lee, Adam Trask and Sam Hamilton.

Ultimately, Lee, who confers with many well-learned men in his community, returns to Trask many years later and follows up with the debate by explaining that the differing translations were based on this word "timshel" which, according to the novel, means "thou mayest," which implies neither an order or a promise, but a choice. Thou mayest triumph over sin.
