I like this song a lot. It's a lot less shallow than a lot of Disney songs these days. It reminds me of a more pop version of India Arie's "Video". Obviously a guy or someone else called her some name (ugly or something) and she doesn't care because she's confident in herself. |

I think this song is sort of told from the persepctive of a father from start to finish. He's describing the feeling of watching a child grow up,and eventually his death as well. "You were a child, Crawling on your knees toward it. Making momma so proud.But your voice was too loud.We like to watch you laughing. Picking insects off of plants. No time to think of consequences" This part of the song he's describing his son as a baby,how often children begin to crawl towards something,anything with no goal in particular. he also tlaks about hwo proud his mother was,as mothers are often prouod of thier children for the simplest of thing,but admonishes the son because he was too outgoing as a child. The picking insects part is a bit ambigous to me --- I think he means how kids simply disrespect the earth and treat it as thier personal plaything,like how little kids burn ants with magnifiying glasses? The first part of the chorus to me is him offering advice to his child in genereal --- Don't go overboard,take only what you need from the earth. Gluttony is one of the greatest and worst sings a perosn can have. A family of treees is obviously referring to the family tree,and how when the narrorator (the father) dies,he will haunt the family tree in a spiritual sense to watch over them. "The water is warm, But it's sending me shivers, A baby is born, Crying out for attention" The father in this story had now become a grandfather. The water is warm is referring to the russian birthing meathod of letting children be born in warm water. He's getting shivers at the miracle of life renew itself,and maybe the fact that babies instincually know to hold thier breath at birth. "The memories fade, Like looking through a fogged mirror. Decision to decisions are made and not bought But I thought this wouldn't hurt a lot I guess not." The narrorator is aging,on the brink of death,perhaps on his death bed. In old age you're memories begin to get foggier and foggier,like the memories in stanza 1 for example. The part about decisons I think hes offering advice to his child. The finally,he dies and his death ends up being a lot more painful than he originally thought ---- in an emotional sense. In the end the chorus is echoing,signifying his final advice to his children and grandchildren,letting him know that he will always be watching spirtually to guard them. Hence "the family of trees wanting,to be haunted". |
