I think it's simple; no need to think all that much. He broke up with a girl in Los Angeles. She did nothing wrong, being a good girl throughout. But he was a bad boy, and he doesn't even miss her. He doesn't even want to go into a relationship for a while ("Gonna leave this world for a while"). The one line that seems a little off is, "I wanna write her name in the sky." Maybe he still loves her, or wants to commemorate her goodness. He's simply free--single. And free falling--falling out of love. Oh, and vampires is just a name to call the bad boys--known for their trickery and seducing, taking what they want. |

If you insist on this song being purely about a desirable woman with AIDS or some other disease, then what are the chains he sings about? So I think GrtOne41 has the right idea. I'm thinking this song is about a prostitute or some other desirable woman, but she is poisonous: diseases (like AIDS), invading his mind against his will, she's bad for his life, etc. The chains are the metaphorical bindings to a true relationship he's already in. He doesn't want to cheat. That's how I immediately saw this song. About a desirable person he should not be desiring. "My pain, your thrill." Similar to how GrtOne41 put this, I think this means that--regardless if she knows he's in a relationship or not--she'd enjoy being with him, but he would not enjoy being with her because she's poisonous to his life (literally, figuratively, etc.). |

I think this song it about him seeing Jenny's number on the wall--wherever it is--and thinking that maybe she's the one for him. That he can save her. The others called her to "have a good time"... He doesn't want that; he wants love. He wants to save her. But Jenny might not even exist; it could be a prank by some other guy making it up or posting it in a bathroom stall. Or maybe it was put there in revenge--one of those "others before." So many possibilities. ^_^ |

I love this song. ^_^ I love a lot of his songs--his world, his personality, his music... I will try to keep this short and simple, avoiding too much philosophy; I will, however, create many topics of debate and conversation. Here is what I think this song is about: "Von Neumann probe programmed to multiply Clickin' and tickin' with the equation of phi Striving and climbing and bribing and lying For science, fudge the numbers so that everything fits." Von Neumann probes are essentially self-replicating machines; they make quantitatively more of themselves as time passes. Phi is many things in mathematics and computer science, namely the "golden ratio" that is seen to be "perfect" in many things--architecture, paintings, rectangular objects... And so these "perfect probes" multiply and keep striving to learn everything, and yet make things up themselves. They lie, in the name of science (and perhaps history--the "lie commonly agreed upon" (Voltaire)). They try to fill in the blanks with their own ideas. Theories. What are these probes? Humans. Humanity tries to learn so much while filling in the gaps with errors and falsities. "Shakin' and bakin' and takin' and takin' and takin' Takin' everything, everything, gimme gimme everything Oh no I see the end of the road Will we explode before the ice age hits?" I love this stanza. It's about humanity. "Shake and bake" = food for the lazy people. It means people are lazy. Key word: lazy. "Takin' and takin'...everything." This implies that humans are greedy creatures. So greedy that they create war, and they will never stop. They will keep taking as much as they can get--at both large (territory) and small (home items) scales. The "end of the road" is...the end of the world! Or rather, the end of humanity. Will we blow ourselves up with nuclear bombs before the planet decides to drastically change? Astronomically speaking, we (as the Earth) are far overdue to being in the next Ice Age; global warming has had its effects... And in a few hundred years, we will have to worry about global COOLING. The new Ice Age will come. But will humanity still exist by then? (I learned a lot of this in an Astronomy college course. =D I loved that class...) "Ooh and our gods and heroes Are only ones and zeroes Join hands and sing along Everything we know is wrong" Ones and zeroes = binary = reference to computers. Computers (and electronic devices in general) rule our lives; we use them every day. Phones, video game consoles, laptops, desktops, etc. Even elevators. We are entering an age where we are so different from ourselves of a hundred years ago. We are changing immensely and will not stop. This is wrong, in a sense, as we are far too used to all this electricity. "I can't take it, I really gotta know I got the fever for the flavor of my frontal lobe I need the info the data and a computer calculator Right click. I gotta download." People really want to know. Everything. Society will not stop at making a simple robot that can, for example, walk on four legs and avoid walls. They will continue and make "artificial intelligence." They won't stop at just what they have. And people will not leave their computers; they use YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc. They reads blogs, fascinating websites, articles, etc. They download pictures, music, movies, and many other things. The "fever for the flavor" is just that. Must...do...things...on...computer. o_o "(O) Make me (one) Copy and paste. Repeat Make me (one) Copy and paste. Repeat Make me (two) Copy and paste. Make me, make me Fibonacci Make me (three) Copy and paste. Repeat Make me (five) Copy and paste. Repeat Make me (eight) Copy and paste. Make me, make me Fibonacci" The chorus! This is, I think, the second main point I figured out from this song. The Fibonacci Sequence, like phi (the golden ratio), is seen as "perfect." It is literally everywhere in architecture of both nature and human-made materials. This chorus would thus most likely mean to "make me perfect." Make us perfect. We multiply and provide offspring (copy/paste)--make them perfect. Perfection: society's greatest goal. (But in my opinion, it's not getting any closer. xD) Last part about the chorus: the numbers in the parentheses. For those of you who do not know those amazing numbers, just look at the title. =P "All wrapped up with a ribbon and a bow I'll shut up cause I don't want to know Living with a band-aid on my brain Everybody play the game" This could have multiple meanings. Ribbon and bow: a present. Made to look nice. Even gilded--covering the bad with something that looks good. Shutting up because the bad is something you don't want to know; just look on the outside and accept the lies and cover-ups. This...is society. Very accepting for everything they read or hear. Gossip, rumors, lies... Horrible stuff. "Living with a band-aid on my brain"... Ideas: mentally scarred for some horrible Internet thing, learning too much, surgery*, etc. "Everybody play the game" = life. Or, more specifically, the society. Living life in today's world--trying to avoid conflicts (or making them), and doing everything explained previously in this comment: multiplying, lying, being lazy, trying to do as much as possible (learn, expand), etc. (The last two seem to contradict, but I'm thinking of different contexts: lazy people, busy society.) * - Surgery... A backdrop of the entire song could also focus more on the technological singularity and even a hivemind idea. (See of that what you will; I won't get into it now. ^_^) The singularity will come, and we will upgrade ourselves. This is a recurrent theme in Dr. Steel's music/world. I love the subject of the singularity, but I won't rant about it now. =P Dr. Steel for World Emperor! |
