an intriguing thought... I'd never heard of East of Eden or Timshel til I got to this forum, hehe, but I'm really loving the idea behind the word and the various references to the book that people keep mentioning. and, while abortion is a possibility (I hadn't noticed that before, about the word choice) i think its more likely that he's probably giving an emphasis just to the idea of life. 'Mother' isn't necessarily literal, it could be a metaphor for giving life to an idea, a dream, an ambition, a goal, in other words, taking action and choosing to make reality that which was not before; and for such an interpretation, saying 'the baby to whom you gave birth' is a tad bit too literal.. it kinda disrupts the subtlety and the imagery - and potential metaphor - that's already going on there... |

| honestly, i hadn't thought of the possibility of it being the banker coming to collect the land. (Altho, that generally happens on paper; I guess the situation you're talking about would more technically be the bank forcing eviction of the tenants of the property as the rights to the land have changed hands.) But, now having considered it, i don't think thats what this last line is about. The last time he went 'out back to get his gun' he was avenging a wrong, he was standing up for what he knew to be right; and this last line i think is less about him going on a killing spree and more about him, in honour and confidence, owning up to his actions without any shame. "Yes sir, it was me, the only son". | |

Alright buddy I beleive in God, I read the bible, but sweetheart you are a long ways off the mark with this one. Switchfoot is not so shallow as to simply make their lyrics up out of re-phrased scripture verses, inserted randomly and unconnected throughout the song. They are slightly more open minded than that. For some reason christians seem to have this idea that any band that beleives in God can't REALLY be christian unless they go putting the bible into every song they make; and then you guys go completely turning the song on it's head just soo you can fit the bible verses into the cracks and justify for yourselves. Well, fine, you go right ahead and do that, but please spare us listening to your wierdisms. Switchfoot is perfectly capable of forming deep and meaningful songs that even carry a christian message behind the words, but are not necessarily specifically scriptural. :) |
