To me this song seems to be about Existentialism. There is only one thing: nothing. It is saying that we are born, we live, and we die. And this earth and the sun will eventually die, and then the galaxy will die, and eventually, because of entropy, everything will just die. And then there will be nothing. It means that there is no point to anything, there is no purpose because eventually everything will fizz out and be nothing. It is the absurdity of existence that is at the core of existentialism. Sometimes, when I am doubting my Christianity, or feeling hopeless, I listen to this song to remind me why I believe in God. |

I also forgot. Connors voice has a despairing, grating intensity that almost makes him sound like a really drunk emo kid, but in a good way. This dude sounds like an older, gruffer David Bowie. I also think that this song is better than Haligh because 1. Haligh is about his lover DYING, which makes it almost TOO intense, especially given Connors intense way of singing, 2. like all of Bright Eyes songs, it is very philosophical in nature, and thus only really accessible through the lens of existential angst, which, along with the death of your partner, is not an emotion as many people can relate to, nor is it an emotion of as much weighty importance to the human mind, as those that occur in normal intimate relationships (because, though the emotions caused by death and existential angst may be more potent, we so rarely feel them that they just become less important). this song, however, plays on tones that we can all very easily relate to, and does it without causing us to despair like connor does, but rather, to sympathize with the sufferer. Its a happier, more pleasant, albeit melancholy emotion than that caused by Haligh, which you either dont understand, and think is weird, or understand, and consequently, have your heart violently torn out of you every time you listen to it. That being said, its true. This song's style is not as innovative or creative as Connors is and i think they could have done a much better job with the climax of the song, The build up took so long that the end was almost anticlimactic. Despite its failings however, I like it more than Haligh, though i dont think they are directly comparable. it'd be like comparing modern metal/rock to Rage Against the Machine. Or modern punk and emo to The Clash. Obviously Rage and The Clash are better because they had a cause, something they were singing for. instead of just money like modern singers. But that doesnt mean their songs are necessarily more pleasant to listen to while driving in your car. |

| I think you are right, and your wrong. I dont think you can directly compare this to Bright Eyes because i dont really see a lot of bright eyes songs as music. I see them as soul and emotion filled poetry set to music, in that, the emotion you feel is derived from Connors words and the emotion he puts into those words despite the fact that the instruments themselves frequently arent as stirring. Many times he sings with nothing more than a guitar backing him. Whereas this song, while very poetic in nature, derives most of its emotional pull from the slow build up of the music to a crescendo and the distinct type of voice that the singer has. Though he puts much much less emotion in to his voice than connor does. The point is, one style is poetically driven, the other is musically driven, and, to my tastes i prefer this song because i am more musically inclined. My brother, however, who is a poet, couldnt disagree more with me. Though he is not suprised to learn that my favorite Oberst song is "Bowl of Oranges" why? because its the most musical | |

It was caused by FDR. he enacted the law that allowed for Sub-prime mortages(though the loophole wasnt oficially discovered and exploited until many years later), which is the biggest factor in what tanked the economy. also, FYI, both Bush and Obama are the two presidents who have MOST violated the constitution of the united states. Each of them, individually, did more that violated the constitution than all of the presidents before them combined. And maybe you dont think thats a bad thing. Maybe you hate the constitution. Maybe you would prefer communism, in that case, you do have your free speech, or you will, until we do in fact, become a communist nation, if we do and then, if you speak out, you will be put in prison. But please research what you are talking about before you open your mouth. Just because you have the right to open your mouth, doesnt mean you would be well advised to, and just because you saw it on tv doesnt mean its true. In fact, it probably means its NOT true. and dude, why do you care what people from other countries think of us? They have never done anything for us. THey take and they take and they take. then they turn around and criticize us. And then they form alliances with our enemies for their own profit. Like how France and Germany formed an alliance with Saddam Heussein in order to get more oil. Thats why everyone was demonizing us at the beginning of the Iraq war. Its because THEY TOO wanted the oil and us invading Iraq would get in the way of their treaty. Im not saying what bush did was right. I think it was stupid. Heussein was the only thing keeping Iran in check, but now they will take over as soon as we leave. A democracy will never be successfully established there. Its impossible to institute a lasting democracy in a muslim country because it is against the fundamental principles of their religion. The point is, please research what you are saying before you say it. That goes for every musician and actor as well. Im tired of people like Matt Damon coming out and saying "we cant have palin be president because we dont know where she was born." when the same retard goes and votes for Obama, whos birth certificate still has yet to be released. Not defending Palin, just saying, the hypocrisy and idiocy is GLARINGLY OBVIOUS here. I dont mind liberals. Sometimes i agree with them. and sometimes republicans piss me the hell off.
