I'm not sure that there is regret there. "And when I saw my labours through" - it sounds to me more like the narrator saw it as his duty. When the job would done, he could move on. |

Like everyone else I originally thought that this song was about a finished relationship, though for my part I thought that perhaps the woman had died, rather than left. The more I listen to it, the mnore I think that perhaps he is singing about a relationship with someone who has an illness such as Alzheimers disease, especially the last verse. I know that John worked as a phsychiatric nurse, and maybe there is some onfluence of that in this song. |
