I like this song because it's so complete, wars aren't easy there isn't a good guy and a bad guy, no one is right (in fact you could state that everybody is in a way wrong, because wars always have civil casualties, and there really is no excuse for war (wich is basicly murder)). tom waits shows this perfecty, everyone loses in war. This situation is so complex and lasted so long it really is difficult to get a clear view on this, and i think Waits kind of did. he point's out the three major party's and their interest and how evereybody tries to solve things but with either wrong intentions or wrong solutions. I also like the "god ending" because both sides of the comflict claim to have god on their side, or to serve their god. but really, if there is a god I doubt he would support the killing of many. Personally, i believe religion should be a private matter and dissing other people because they believe in a different god is hypocrite. as long as you say you have the right to believe in a religion you choose, you can't say that other people don't have that right. |

I think Tom waits really made this song his own. if you compare his version with the doo-wop original (which is also nice) i believe he added an extra dimension. he made it extremly beautiful and sweet but with a haunting and spooky undertone. the deep warm drums and the cold, close to the bone guitarsolo's (Marc Ribot?) makes this song a classic Tom Waits. The thing I like about this song (in his version) is that you don't know if his love is reciprocated. i always thought the last lines in the chorus were " I wanna tell you how much i love you but i'm drowning in the sea of love". as if his love was to big and brought him down. |

I love the line "how do the angels get to sleep, when the devil leaves the porchlight on" it is so powerfull and true. Everytime I go home while spending a long night in a bar or when i'm supposed to study for my exams and get distracted and don't do the work I think of this line. |

I always saw this song as a funny love song. when you're in love you tend to see the world as a perfect place where flowers grow and birds sing. i thought the protagonist had fallen in love and the pizza hut was suddenly coverd with flowers. but the funny part is that the protagonist is very uncomfortable with this love, he wants to be single again. he doesn't like his life has been changed now he is in love. |
