Red – Let Go Lyrics 10 years ago
Wrestling with doubts and temptations all the while knowing what Christ has\wants for us. The constant fight wears one down .... sometimes you just have to vent and scream out "Let Go!"

By the way, LOVE the song.

Red – Damage Lyrics 11 years ago
The recognition that everything he has become is wrong. Perhaps a path begun by "one simple mistake", now exhausted and overwhelmed by who he is ... reaching rock bottom, knowing it, and ultimately pleading to be saved.

Red – Perfect Life Lyrics 11 years ago
Many comments begin with how simple the song meaning is, and it is ... so keep the explanation simple.

The "perfect life" is referring to "perfect" in the eyes of the world. That is celebrity, materialism, pride, vanity, etc. are all just superficial replacements to hide behind rather than being yourself and who God meant you to be.
Being "perfectly broken" is accepting your flaws ..... be who you are.

Makes me think of Romans 12:2 .....
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."

Switchfoot – Afterlife Lyrics 11 years ago
I think MSF's take is on the right path, but there is more in my opinion.

Many Christians "believe" they are living a good life, but good deeds is not the passage to Heaven. The song implies recognizing the sins of this life and realizing a life in Heaven begins now .... not in the afterlife. Why wait? And in the excitement of this personal revelation, live it openly and loud. "I cant just shut it up and fake that I'm alright" ... sharing it with others and suggesting that everyday is a chance to make the same commitment. Why wait?
But where I think it comes back to MSF's suggestion of living in the here and now and LIFE is the recognition that LIFE is precious and will end. Have you made your commitment to Christ and lived it, or are you faking it? Are you ... "ready now?" Because if your life ended today, the Afterlife may be too late ...

Better Than Ezra – Porcelain Lyrics 11 years ago
Obsessive love for an ex-girlfriend. (Cheating ex-girlfriend?)

The emotion and frustration to be around her is unmanageable ... but, "never hit a woman, for she is like porcelin", you will break her and be the fool for doing so.
Instead, he vents, screams out, and openly wishes her ill-will.

The Cure – Fascination Street Lyrics 12 years ago
Somewhat mocking the American mindset of getting ready and eventually hitting the open street, Bourbon Street, with the intent of debouchary and sex.

The Cure – Jumping Someone Else's Train Lyrics 12 years ago
The song actually came about after a discussion with Sousxie (for whom Robert played guitar for a short stint). The revelation of how they were achieving a unique sound and lyrics with purpose, but other bands were "jumping" in on the sound and, to a point, even stealing lyrics to get a leg up on recognition and celebrity. The later they could care less about, but saw how others were "cutting corners" to get that one hit out there - only to get "back in line". (e.g. Not a lot of love from them for Morrissey (The Smiths) and others at the time.)

Violent Femmes – Kiss Off Lyrics 12 years ago
High school lonliness and angst gone very bad.
Remember, this song is a product of the 80's.

The high school click mentality and the outcast that is the perception in the song.
I need someone to talk to ...
Could it be you? ... only to be rejected
The outcast ... talk behind one's back, the stares.

Until he snaps ... Kiss off!

Ten round clip, ten shots, one for each misery endured ... defintely goes down on your permanent record.

If memory serves, written in 1982 not long after a similar event at a Las Vegas school where a senior "snapped" after years of being picked on, taunted, etc. before shooting a teacher who was often involved in the taunts about a specific assignment. Upon leaving the school he said something to another student to the effect of "That's that" ... Kiss Off.

The White Stripes – Seven Nation Army Lyrics 12 years ago
I realize this is likely off from the actual intent .... but as I immerse myself in the lyrics, I can't help but think of a soldier's inner conflict between duty and personal beliefs.

Rage Against the Machine – Killing In The Name Lyrics 12 years ago
Sometimes authority has to be defied or you voluntarily subject yourself to do as you're told. Once you succumb to that, you are no longer in control. The ultimate "free me from government oppression" rage .....
However, the "badge" is that of courage ... justifying those who stood up to fight. The "whites" to me is not racial at all, but a symbol of the purity of white. "Back to the basics" blank slate kind if thing. Or even recognition of a "death shroud" which is often white ... of those sacraficed.

Everclear – Local God Lyrics 12 years ago
Ever experience that moment when with your group of friends wehere everythign seems to just be perfect? Like you are untouchable? Everything is as if you all are in complete unison, one perfectly happy collective? Everyone sees you as in control, having fun, an "in-crowd" that gets what they want and no one cares because they only want to be lucky enough to be included in your escapades. THAT is feeling like a Local God. Stupid, happy, and numb ...

P.O.D. – Youth Of The Nation Lyrics 12 years ago
The emptiness, aimless, disrespectful lives too many youth today lead (or even previous generations) based on measuring their self-worth in terms of "today".
The only reality of "today" is that it can all be gone tomorrow. The third person narrative of these lives demonstrates how easily short-sided the youth can become ... getting sucked in to the "herd" mentality of what is cool or expected of them in order to be "accepted". What they are willing to sacrafice. Especially when there is no family structure to support and raise them. They are left to the street and the peer pressures, starving to fill the voids within themselves instead of seeking Him.
But only when stepping back to see it from outside themselves (perhaps from death) are they realize life is SO much more ...

Coping with the loss of loved ones ... asking God to fill the painful loss (spaces) in his life while being encourage, despite the memories fading from his mind, that he is not alone in this life. God is with you.

Nine Lashes – Anthem of the Lonely Lyrics 12 years ago
Because sometimes recognizing your lonliness is not enough. Live it for a while and understand it for what it is. The "anthem" of one's loneliness is the self-absorbtion in the depression in creates.
It is "Right now" and one "Never want to leave this place" while "... right now see(ing) it in a different way" ... but if you approach this person to "help them" ... "So right now even if you take me on" .... they will cower back in the depression. "I'll stand, the lonely. Stand, the lonely".
The irony is that the anthem is also a banner you carry by knowing that you can only feel lonely if you first understood what it was to be loved. So tear out the "stone callous and bone" heart that is possessing you and know it for what it ..... WAS.

Līve – Lightning Crashes Lyrics 15 years ago
This song has always moved me as it is obvious it has many others here.
Being adopted, I always connected with the emotional rolling thunder that must be felt by a mother losing a child or a child losing a mother never known to them.

Every time I think of how my birth mother must have felt, I imagine it must have been like I died.
From my perspective, I lived many years not knowing the truth about my mother and it was like she had died before I could know her.

I know there are many perspectives here and how the song speaks to each of us, this is just how it impacts me. Even today, now having met and knowing my birthmother, the song instills meotions ...

Oh now feel it comin' back again
Like a rollin' thunder chasing the wind
Forces pullin' from the center of the earth again
I can feel it

Līve – Selling The Drama Lyrics 15 years ago
First let me say, we all hear and feel the lyrics to every song from our own perspective. This song is one that speaks to me because of my personal path I have walked.
I think that renosian is closest to what I interpret.

However, I see it closer to his acknowledgement of his own sin. Christ was crucified to reconcile (or ransom) man's sin. This man has met his reconciliation on "the chair".

and to christ: a cross
and to me: a chair
I will sit and earn the ransom
from up here

Looking back from the afterlife ...

and to right or wrong
and to meek or strong
it is known, just scream it from the wall

We all know right from wrong ... Christians believe the meek will inherit the earth ... "it is all known" ... just let it out of yourself and scream it, why do so many people fight it? An awakening ... an acknowledgement.

hey, now we won't be raped
hey, now we won't be scarred like that

it's the sun that burns
it's the wheel that turns
it's the way we sing that makes 'em dream

I am male, but can not imagine a more tramatic loss or theft then to have been raped. The emotional and physical scars that must remain must be overwhelming. Continuing to live in sin will continue to burn just as the sun will. You can't will it away while you stand in the heat of it. It is so obvious yet mankind does it anyway. The wheel turns, you know it in your heart, but you don't go anywhere. A spinning wheel ...
It is the envy of those with faith that makes teh sinner dream. Almost like saying ... "I want it, I want to live a Godly life, but I am stuck in the spinning wheels of sin."

Ultimately paid by "the chair".
