Jackson Browne – Doctor My Eyes Lyrics 15 years ago
Wow ! ! ! After reading this, I think I need to see an eye doctor. ;)
I have a sense of humor so I can get a giggle out of this post and can almost appreciate its "creativity". If your were trying to make a point about what JB was generally responding to in writing this song in the first place, then I think you hit the on the head. It may have been written during the Vietnam war, I dunno, but it at least was written in response to negative contributions of angry and shallow people and the darkness they bring to the world. You're a master, whether it be to indirectly make that point, or maybe you are actually living the part.
Thanks for the laugh. Good luck, and if this is truly from your heart, I hope for you that you can find real happiness some day. I know that you will probably respond to this post with all the sarcasm and hateful dialect, as you did the last poster, and that is OK with me. I'm not bothered by it as I'm sure not many others in cyber space will take you all that seriously. I'll just laugh it off with a grain of salt and continue pitying you, you mother fucker. Ha ha.

Jackson Browne – Our Lady of the Well Lyrics 15 years ago
I stated, above, making reference to Mexico. I actually should have stated Central/South American scene. Maybe a place where simpler life style, in tune with their spiritual beliefs and family values, as opposed to how far the other way things have gone in the US. Back in the sixties, this was probably more true than today, as now it seems things have gone awry across most of the world.

Whether JB is religious or not? That's between him and God, I suppose, though I also see indications of his being conscious of religion and God in his lyrics. Don't know why croakditch stated that he felt JB was "agnostic at best", but figure it was probably a statement based on his assumption that a liberal minded writer must be non-believing unless otherwise proclaimed... I personally think that is painting with a broad brush and that croakditch is mistaken.
Regarding using the name Maria in lieu of Mary, if you look at the cover of the album you see a scene near the well. I see a Mexican/Spanish theme there, where Maria would be an appropriate translation. I too think there is some religious implication here, specifically from the roots of Catholicism, though I don't believe this to be a specifically religious song. Though I do see that he has included religion in the writing of his song, and it is easy to see that this is something significant in his heart.

Tom Waits – Pony Lyrics 15 years ago
Interesting article I think anyone reading this would appreciate:http://www.tomwaitslibrary.com/lyrics/mulevariations/pony.html

This interview with Mr. Waits explains some of his writing. It seems the 44'll get you 99 may mean ordering a 44 in a cafe, looking like a bumb, will get you kicked out, or it may also indicate using a 44 caliber gun will get you 99 years in prison. That one wasn't answered clearly. But Evelyn is his aunt.

After thinking about "a manzanita cross", I am not sure if it could be a manzanita cain across the face of Burnt Face Jake, or did he make a cross of manzanita to mark Jake's grave? And if it is a marker, did he just die of exposure or something, or during a physical exchange for survival in a rough environment?

Anyway, check out the above link and see some of Tom's comments. interesting. In any case, the song is lonely and cold, longing for a home he will probably never see again. Wow! What a fantastic writer...

Well I stand corrected. Found an interesting site with an article of an interview with Mr. Waits within. It seems that Evelyn is/was actually his aunt, from "home". She apparently passed away during the making of the album and she is in the song as a tribute, to her. I guess home was a little further back than I had suspected.

Jethro Tull – Christmas Song Lyrics 15 years ago
This is surely a song to remind the listener of the true meaning of Christmas. Ian Anderson has expressed, in earlier releases, his discontent with organized religion, for instance the song My God, from Aqualung seems to implicate the Catholic Church, and his experience in it, as offensive to him... The Catholic Church has come a long way from some of its perceived disciplined ways, however, and now practices more compassionate and Christ-like attitude, which I personally welcome. Or maybe I'm just grown up now and can now see its intent and value. But I digress...

To understand where Anderson comes from with this song, I have to assume that he is a spiritual person, cherishing the content of the bible and frustrated by human influence and twisting of the word. As a purest, he seems to be disgusted with how commercial interests and self serving humanity have manipulated the meaning of its teachings for various alternate purposes. I believe Ian Anderson to be a purest, and someone who not only ignores, but rejects all of those entities that try to taint the truth of something as important to him as the teachings of the bible and the true meaning of Christmas.

And if this is all too uncomfortable for you to accept, then remember that it's just a Christmas song. You may resume your selfish pleasure...

Kind of a dark song, but enlightening.

I like this interpretation very much. The only things that I see that weren't my original feelings are that instead of giving advice to a younger man, I see him as simply reflecting on his life, lonely and cold. But that's just what strikes me. I do like the advice approach as well.

The other is that, for some reason, I tend to see Evelyn as his wife from earlier days. Maybe he burned out on his life and the positive things in it were lost when he left it. Taking for granted the good in his life, not seeing the happiness security of the life he lived, he hit the road to find something... Maybe to find himself??? In any case, I see his memories with Evelyn and his dog Gyp as happier times and wishing he could return. Just can't find his way back there, if it even exists anymore, for whatever reason...

All in all, though, I do like your interpretation. Your's has enlightened and reinforced mine.
