THANK YOU! This is exactly what i think its about... I think that Sufjan tends to cross reference and use the same metaphors in different songs... like he uses the phrase "on the floor" in Djohariah, I Walked and one or two more songs and like in the song 'all delighted people' he says "your arms surround me in the lake" I think thats referencing the song 'to be alone with you' ("i'de swim across lake Michigan"). Anyways... I think that He is talking about God here defiantly. It fits. Stupid man in the window, I couldn't be at rest All my delight, all that mattered, I couldn't be at rest From what I liked, from what I gathered, I couldn't be at rest He couldn't be at rest because there was something prohibiting him from being a Christian. Trust me its hard to find peace without God. Perhaps it was an unanswered question about Christianity like 'Why does God Love us?' In theory God would be "stupid" to Love us after what we have done to Him. "From what I liked, from what I gathered" Everything he knew about Christianity, he knew so much but this one answer. Very Tragic. Very angsty. Then "Oh, I know it wasn't safe, it wasn't safe to breathe at all" he felt like because he didn't have the answer to this question about Christianity... he couldn't be a Christian and he knew that if he wasn't a christian then any breath could be his last for eternity. |

| To me this song seems to be about him debating the sin of pre-marital sex. With a girl that he has known for a long time and that he really, truly Loves. He seems to be talking about how amazing the physical contact with this woman that he truly truly Loves. I think he is a Christian so thats why this song exists. When he says "And the people bowed and prayed, To the neon god they made" I think that he is saying something like "Well the Israelites made the golden calf thats a sin too... what I did (pre-marital sex) isnt that bad". 'And what difference does it make if the world is a mess?' What difference does it make for me to have pre-marital sex? It happens all the time. 'suffer not the child among you or shall you die young' you should have fun in life..... | |
