I guess at this point nobody is going to come to a consensus, lol. However, I do tend to lean toward the more literal interpretation of the lyrics: it's about piracy. The message seems pretty clear to me. I have to really take the words loosely to see the abusive relationship angle. "Welcome, come in, yes this is me I gave once too much and now I can't get rid of thee I can't be subtle, I can't be kind Why I should be there for you, fuck off and get a life!!" - I gave you too much, and now you're just here taking more and more. Fuck off and quit stealing my shit. "Read a book unwritten, kill the poets dream unhidden I wonder, did I love too much, cross the final line Rip my life and spread the news, cut my wings and make me choose I leave the fuckin' sword on the rock, Feel hurt? Why I should give a damn." - I wonder if I gave too much. Keep this shit up and I'm going to leave/quit! Feel hurt? So what. "I know I'm easy target, I'm sold on blackmarket How would you feel if I stole what you need I give everything to you.What will you do? What makes you think you won't burn in hell? I never noticed before, but I just happened to be listening to "Blank File" while writing this. :D |

I think that this song isn't necessarily about a physical puppet. I think the "puppet" the narrator is chasing is fame and fortune. In my mind, the narrator is a musician seeking recognition; to become "the master". After striving and begging for a while, he gets his wish. He becomes famous. But, the fame and fortune aren't what he expected them to be. In the end, the "master" tells him when, where, and how to sing, and the narrator just becomes a "puppet" for the master. The puppet represents both greed (at the beginning) and control (at the end). The master, in this analogy, is either, to me, a record label or the masses. As a musician, and I'm sure most others would agree, sometimes being told when and where you'll be performing, and being constantly critiqued based on how you perform, sometimes leaves you feeling a bit like a puppet, out of control of your own life, but in the hands of a master who sometimes seems to take pleasure in forcing you to perform. The curse is not being physically turned into a puppet, but being forced to act or perform at the whims of someone else. The ending, I think, can be interpreted two ways, based off my assessment. Either he 1) actually kills himself to escape and become free again, or 2) he finds some other way to break free which is analogous with "cut off the strings." Either way, the message is be careful what you wish for, you might just get it. |
