I'm pretty sure that the first line should be "Hydrogen in our veins, it cannot hold itself, our blood is boiling". This would make much more sense with the next lyric about pressure above building, and it sounds like what Flo is singing. Also, the word is "catalyst", not "catalyct". Catalysts are substances that allow chemical reactions to happen at lower than normal energy requirements, without getting used up in the process. Also, on other sites I've read, and I hear this as well, that it's "The static of your arms, it is the catalyst". |

| Florence + the Machine – Dog Days Are Over Lyrics | 15 years ago |

If you take not only the song, but the entire album into account, this song must have something to do with relationships. I agree with those who stated that it has something to do with a previous abusive relationship, as well as alcoholism. The dog days, in my opinion, indicate something bad, and while she may be referring to the apocalyptic horses, I believe that they only indicate that change is coming. My take on the lyrics, is that she isn't quite finished with the abusive relationship, but is looking into entering a better relationship with someone else. This is what the horses signal, the end of the previous relationship, either through violence, or through the fact that it just can not continue. Perhaps this new relationship wasn't at all expected, but looking back, was inevitable. This would explain the 'being suddenly hit with happiness, and being helpless against it'. However, she is hesitant to enter the new relationship due to emotional scars. The "And I never wanted anything from you| Except everything you have and what was left after that too." doesn't quite make sense to me, as it could be either her previous partner having said this to her, or her demand of her new partner. The running, to me, indicates that a decision with regard to entering the new relationship needs to be made soon, as the old relationship is crashing and burning, and the new one won't be offered for ever either. The meaning, then, would be to embrace the new possibility of happiness, as, in this case, the devil you know is certainly worse than the devil you don't. This also works well together with the next song on the album, Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up) which has a repeated line "This is a gift, it comes with a price. Who is the lamb and who is the knife?". As a whole, I see this as a concept album, running the length of two consecutive relationships, one as bad as the other. |
