I guess this reply is a bit late but that line makes me think of snakes. Snakes are lowly, afraid of people and generally unloved, so I think that fits with how John related to his stepfather. |

I think this is about either being on drugs or being asleep, but more generally about escaping from reality. He feels like he is drifting out to sea as he focuses on his sensations, then he reflects on a time in their past when they felt lost. In the morning, he is dragged back to reality and he loses touch with his deep thoughts. |
