While the beginning does seem to indicate that yeah, being the "nice guy" can suck, much of the song also seems to be a condemnation of the "nice guys" who have something of a superiority complex BECAUSE they view themselves as nice. |

To me, it seems to be saying that everyone is lonely, the world is full of people who feel alone, who feel like no one cares. Yet, in spite of this, some push on anyway, they work, they try to contribute, even if in the end no one notices. They may get no results, they may remain alone, but they try regardless. |

Yep, this is how I would see it. Especially given that "it's not what you make it's what you leave" line. Everyone in this song has made some crappy choices and they're pretty much damned for it. It's still catchy, though. |

It's almost seems like the perspective of the booty call, who knows he's being used and mistreated and he hates her for it. Yet he's fallen hard for the girl and even though he knows she's a "cancer" to him, he can't get enough of her. |

I would say this song is what a few have already noted, two people who have feelings for one another, but he's reluctant to get serious. She forces the issue and while he's still reluctant, another suitor enters the picture, shaking the narrator's confidence even more. He compares himself to the other guy, being rather pessimistic about it and in the meantime still waffles about giving her his final answer. By the end, he's pretty down on himself, since he views that he gets the raw end of most problems they face together. Nice to see Sting, romantic that he is, thinks the guy wins in the end. |

I would go with this. I think part of it is an interpretation of calling those we don't know strangers. Like the first line says, if everyone's a stranger then they're strange. It seems like it's noting how isolated and alone one feels when they don't know anyone, when they're alone and depressed about it. It seems like no one acknowledges you or cares about you, though it may be that you're just as strange to them as they are to you. |
