Good for you for working on being true to yourself. Goodluck with telling your family. My best friend was terrified to tell hers when she came to terms with it all, but people surprise you. We all just celebrated her and her wife's wedding this summer. Nothing made her happier than to see both of their families...grandmas and all dancing and celebrating.
I agrees that tis song is ambiguous enough to work for many different people on different levels. |

I love how we get to choose which feeling we want to experience by which version we listen to. The somber, reflective Argue with a Tree or the angry, powerful Approaching Normal. The both are special in their own ways.
It's about waking up to realize that you've hit rock bottom. Illness, drugs, lies, pressure to succeed and make people happy...the weight of it all is crashing down. You've told so many lies that you can't keep them straight " liars, they leave a guilty trail" and you created your own he'll, but you've blamed others. "disregarding that I've created these monsters". As your laying there realizing what a colossal mess you've made for yourself and all the people you've hurt, you just want to run away from it all. |

Keep studying. They may experience symptoms related to schizophrenia and some of the medication is similar, but they are two separate diagnoses. I will trust what Justin tells everyone he has and not what someone on the Internet says...especially since they can't even spell schizophrenia right. |

Wonderful song. I especially love the signing, yells at the end...so much emotion in them. I think that it mostly about people just not doing what is right and creating a scary wold. At times he can find refuge by closing his eyes and thinking of the peace that his family can bring, because the world is crazy and no one is listening to what's right. |

I've always thought that the waitress is someone he likes, but isn't involved with and the middle part of the song is about his current girlfriend. Want what you don't already have kind of a thing. One of my favorite songs to crank up though! |

It's supposed to be simple, he wrote it for his very young daughter to reminder that even though life will get hard their is always a up swing to look forward to. It's become my go to happy song.
The song is anti-mainstream sellout, because he didn't write it for radio, he wrote it for his little girl. How can you not love that? :) |

I think it's just part of the overall bad relationship they shared. The "boy" he figuratively beat up is the one she wanted him to be, but he's not going to be that boy any longer and is going to do what makes himself happy. |

It was on the end of Foiled which was before his daughter was born, so that wasn't the original meaning. But since Blue has come along and his marriage was rocky, he's tweaked the lyrics in concerts to fit her. The performances included him cradling his arms like rocking a baby when he says, " don't try to take her from me". The pain in his voice was truly heart-breaking. You can find it on YouTube. |

He's been through some really hard things in life, but now it has a new meaning because of his daughter. He's humbled by the world. "give applause to what I can't control". He wants nothing more than to be healthy for his child. Love it! |

Well, he explains it very clearly on Argue with a Tree.
Every time I listen to it I just can't help thinking about his poor mom hearing this sadness and despair coming from her 14 year old "baby".
I've always assumed that he "gently closes the closet door and crawls to his room" because he just secretly took the gun out of it while his mom was in the bathroom. (hear the water drip from the faucet). He's shaking because he is at the very real and emotional point of killing himself when someone interrupts him. The last bit is my favorite. That visual of whoever it was that interrupted him sitting on the floor with him, holding him, silently trying to comfort him as he lets go of the gun while they are wrapped in the bedding. In my head it's his mom, but then if she was there he wouldn't have to confess, so I don't know who it's supposed to be. I only wish that he ended with that life is for everyone, because I believe it is, but I'm told by many that that is the most important line. The most important one to me is "wrapped around me and you." He's not as alone as he feels. |
