| I love how Emily's voice sounds when she sings "Every living thing pushed into the ring, fight it out to wow the crowd." | |

I think this is a song about their life of stardom. "Get hot Get too close to the flame" Their fame may be starting to get to their head, and they're getting to close to crashing and burning, losing everything they built up. "Wild open space Talk like an open book Sign me up Got no time to take a picture I'll remember someday All the chances we took" They don't have time to stop and savor the moment, but because of all the chances they took it will stay in their minds. And speak up, because if you want to do something you have to start by saying it. "We're so close to something better left unknown We're so close to something better left unknown I can feel it in my bones" They're getting close to the fall, and they want to leave it unknown, but something in their bones tells them it might be inevitable. "Gimme sympathy After all this is gone Who would you rather be The Beatles or The Rolling Stones? Oh, seriously You're going to make mistakes you're young" When it's all over, be gentle, because it will be hard to cope with. And when it ends, which it will, how would you rather be remembered, like the Beatles or the Rolling stones? And maybe to the younger band members, don't blame yourselfs for trouble we come across, everybody makes mistakes. "Come on baby, play me something Like 'Here Comes the Sun'" Saying don't give up hope, keep optimistic music close at hand. "Don't go Stay with the all unknown Stay away from the hooks All the chances we took" Don't fall into the trap of fame, fortune, and publicity. |

| Metric – Sick Muse Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I agree with Shades of Gray, but I think another way to look at it is that maybe she's fallen in love with someone, and she can't stop thinking of them. She can't focus, and so she's telling cupid to "pull his little arrows out and live her life," because she's and icon and people look up to her. Then, the guy she loves wants to get with her because of her money. She's trying to look around it and find the good in it (we looked at them eleven ways), but she can't look at him without realizing that that's what he really wants (You said "look at me", I looked away). In the chorus she's saying how everyone wants to fall in love, but everyone wants to lead and have people look up to them, but it's hard to do both. Then she's warning cupid that it's pointless to keep her in love with this guy, because "Money is a sick muse," and it's not worth it if he's just taking advantage of her. The line "She said: I'm with stupid, money is a sick muse" could mean other girls agree with her maybe? Or maybe in this song cupid is portrayed as a girl... I don't know, this interpretation is kind of far out, and the one with the record label is more likely, but this could work too. I guess this is just how someone in love with someone who doesn't love them back might interpret it... I should know. |
