Tom Waits – Soldier's Things Lyrics 15 years ago
It's the garage/estate sale of an old dead soldier, veteran of WWII or maybe WWI. All these things that he loved now are just junk, and I'm selling it all.

What kills me is the fact that boots are still full of rocks. Maybe he never put those boots on again, so he never realized that there were still rocks in them. Or maybe he did know the rocks were there. But he was like, damnit, I'm keeping those rocks in those boots. I didn't knock them out either. I'm selling his boots with the rocks still in them.

He got a medal for bravery, but now no one remembers. He was a badass vibrant powerful soldier who did great things, but then he was a lonely gray old man, and now he's dead and dust. You don't care because you are here to just pick over the junk in this box and whine about the dent in the hood.

But this other one here. It's for me. He gave it to me, saying "This is for you". That meant a lot. That was a hell of a thing to do, to give your medal to another. Maybe his son. So this one is for bravery and this one is for me.

But I need the money or don't care so I'm selling it, too. For a lousy dollar. That moment when he gave it to me is meaningless now.

It sucks that everything turns to dust.
