The Clash – Charlie Don't Surf Lyrics 5 months ago
@Vacuitys Bane This song came out in 1980, well after the Manson murders. You are probably thinking of Helter Skelter, from the Beatles' white album. You can Google the connection if you want the full story.

@[Armegideon:54166] A curious take on it. The last line of that stanza is 'Across the world we're gonna blow 'em down'. If anything, that lyric is written from the perspective of the US government sending troops overseas to Vietnam.

@[winkosmosis:54164] A key lyric in the song is 'Africa is choking on their coca-colas'. That is not about 'justification of violence', so much as it is suggesting that trying to bring first-world culture to third-world nations can hurt them more than help them.

The Clash – Rebel Waltz Lyrics 5 months ago
If this is about a specific war / revolution, it's not clear which one it refers to. However, the 'hidden meaning' here is the 'dancing on air' lyric. That refers to being hanged. "I saw an army of rebels dancing on air" means he saw them all being executed by that method.

@[cardcheat:47428] Maybe so, but the song is basically a modern version of that old time classic "Lupe Lu". Mick's other vocal track on the Combat Rock LP ("Inoculated City") is actually more interesting (and certainly more in line with their original vision as a band), as far as I am concerned.

@[Strummerite:47427] The bass work on "The Crooked Beat" (Paul's own composition) and "One More Time" are certainly no slouches, either.

@sgt.peppper There was a movie with the same title, I am pretty sure it was a western. They were probably co-opting the image of a bunch of cowboys. Just my theory.

The Who – Did You Steal My Money Lyrics 10 years ago
This was one of the worst songs ever recorded by the band; it can be seen as a kind of catharsis, if you read "Who I Am", Pete's autobiography. It's noteworthy that the more self-pitying Pete gets, the more the quality of the music itself suffers. "Empty Glass" (from the album of the same name) is the only exception to this.

@[dsdoak:1572] I am not sure if 'suicide' is really the central theme here. After all, no one close to Bono - or anyone in the band, as far as I know - has ever taken their own life. On the other hand, the band probably DID know people who have taken heroin (note "Bad"). Would a person trying to talk someone out of suicide say "Here's the rope?" I hardly think so! Also note the whole rhythym of the number - the headlong rush, kind of a musical equivalent to the 'rush' of drug use, then the sudden, abrupt ending - alluding to death from overdose ("The longest sleep"). That is my take on it, anways.
