I think this song is about being brave and taking risks in order to feel something. It's that ol' "heart on your sleeve" thing. Not necessarily willing to be hurt or accepting that that's a risk, it's actually going out of your way to do it. Dude goes into a room, disrobes like, "Take all of me. I'm showing myself!" and is let down when it's not really a ghost after all and is just "made out of paper and glue". Also, "my heart is a kingdom where the king is a heart. my heart is king...king of hearts." There's definitely a double meaning. He's ruled by his heart which leads to the risk taking behavior which is exemplified by the metaphor for a card in a stack of cards that people use to gamble - king of hearts. Also, synonymous with the whole album, this song too is about growing older...leaving the past behind. "Passing the baton to from the old mare to the fawn" (silver moons). He knows this disposition of going with his heart in this way can be seen as immature and that he needs time to mature. Or even that his heart itself is immature. In the first stanza, he says the black swan "was appointed by the king and people took it as a sign that he needed more time" That king, we later learn, is his heart. The song is also called black swan so maybe that's what this whole thing is about. |

| Sunset Rubdown – You Go On Ahead (Trumpet, Trumpet II) Lyrics | 9 years ago |

I agree. I definitely think this song is about putting on a facade, a mask (war paint on face) to pursue and art which is supposed to be an expression of freedom. Artists get stuck in the trap of seeking approval - "See the sirens and the lizards, cluck their tongues behind the stage, see the actor keep a ritual to keep them all at bay." The word "ritual" suggests taking that freedom away. Being stuck in that routine to please the "sirens and the lizards" taking about the actor behind their back or "stage". It's also interesting how Krug uses an actor for this metaphor. He could have used any type of artist but he chose an actor...possibly the literal meaning. The one who acts and pretends...the facade. It's also interesting how he integrates a trumpet in these lyrics. A trumpet is a symbol for self aggrandizement. Fanfare...the phrase "tooting your own horn". Artists often get stuck in the trap of thinking they're the best. Krug would rather be humbled by "languages he's never learned" or "come home naked (and)...chaste". He wants to be pure (chaste) again. And for him purity his honesty - nakedness. Purity also means no more hiding behind the facade of the ego. Nakedness represents humility and that humility and honesty of nakedness sets him free. "The truth will set you free" etc. The last line, "if reflections on the water sometiems look like burning tears, we can watch them change in shape without pushing off the pier" He's reflecting on what he feels. He's reconsidering leaving it all behind as he said in the beginning with, "navigate to hills where no musicians live". He's now saying, "maybe we don't have to leave...maybe we don't have to 'push off the pier'. Instead, we can watch these grievances I have or 'tears', reveal themselves as not so bad after all, or "change in shape." ..... |

| Sunset Rubdown – Shut Up I Am Dreaming of Places Where Lovers Have Wings Lyrics | 9 years ago |
| @[musicforants:15156] I like your interpretation. Just adding to the end: he is also afraid of the sky. So, he's not going to fly. He's afraid of his lover or the lover he has with her. Maybe that's why they're so far apart. | |

| I think it's about a girl trying to find herself. I love the "she's a beautiful mental jukebox, a sailboat explosion, as snap of electric whipcrack" I think it's describing the intricacies of her brain/mental processes. Her brain is a "mental jukebox" whose neurons are firing and dying like wires on a sailboat when it explodes. Also, a sailboat wouldn't really explode on it's own because there's no engine...nothing to explode. So, there has to be something external to make these whipcracking/snapping wires snap and crack. Perhaps drugs. Possibly acid or any drug that you take to have these types on internal epiphanies. | |
