To speculate and reconstruct a story that the lyrics only hint to is to limit the entire poetic expression as an abbreviated narration. It sounds like the poet is to shy or ashamed to tell the story as it is and he or she indulges in metaphors and euphemisms. Lyrics can't be all like that, to say the least. I don't think meaning exists in a ready-made state and poetry comes along and mixes it up so that it needs some effort to restore it. Rather meaning is the result of chosing the right words, it is always made on the spot, it doesn't precede the process of mentally chosing the words and thinking about the desired effect. Now to get back to the self-absorbed personality that the lyrics of this song make reference to. This person is described in abstract terms, "the patterns they control your mind". I like it how this abstact perception of someone close takes over: "those patterns take away my time". It's not "baby, you take away my time", but "those patterns". The verse "hello, goodbye" sounds to me like the only form of communication possible with such a person: the formal greetings with nothing in between, an expression of the impossibility of dialogue. |

these lyrics stand out for me: because the patterns they control your mind those patterns take away my time hello, goodbye You can draw the conclusion that there is a relationship at stake because of the indication of affection, "oh baby", and the line "and if it isn't me then pack your bags and leave". It's funny how some people that leave comments get carried away and create stories starting from very little. You cannot even say for sure that it's an erotic relationship, it may as well be about a parent that's angry with her or his child. Drugs, because of "high on your own supply"? Could be, but just as well it could be a metaphor designed to deliver the image of a self-absorbed personality. |
