The last stanza, about sitting home in LA watching old Cronkite, is obviously about how we become inured to the global tragedies played out on the nightly news.
The song itself, updated for more modern times, seems about the Port Royal earthquake that destroyed that entire city and left it largely forgotten in modern times. |

Aw fer...jeez, people, this is one of Bob's few songs that is actually transparent; he is writing about the experience of growing up in America, and how history is taught with the traditional slant (at least at the time he, and I, were growing up). How the victors write the history books, and that sort of thing. |
