Josh Ritter – The Curse Lyrics 15 years ago
I know that Ritter has said at least once that the song was literally about the mummy falling in love with an archaeologist, but I can't help but post another comment.

To me, this song has always been about a relationship. Regardless whether it's a performer or celebrity or absolute nobodies. The girl scoops up the "mummy" out of depression, loneliness, sadness, loss (take your pick, a past relationship? I know I've laid around my house like the dead trying to get myself back together after a serious break-up). Then suddenly here is this beautiful light, this girl who laughs and cares for the mummy and writes about him, adores him.

Over time, the mummy picks himself back up and can be himself and "alive" for everyone, not just his savior. He regains confidence and begins doing things for himself, on his own.. and gets distracted. Eventually, the girl slowly becomes no long attractive to him, he moves on. She dies out of his memory.

The curse in this case, is that without her he will eventually crash again. Burying himself in regret, loneliness.. the usual. Until someone digs him up. Alternatively, the curse would be that he can't find happiness in others, regardless of their kindness to him.
