I think this song is about someone who is not only haunted by his own demons, but can only see the lies from those around him, how fake people can be, and these things are all he can really see in the world. He has gotten to the point that he can't trust the world, can't trust himself and his own point of view, can't trust anyone, and he's just gotten caught in this downward spiral of loathing, mistrust, and apathy. It's just become a vicious cycle, basically. |

This was just a lazy, breezy song to me as a teenager back in '94. But listening to it now, I envision a girl who's falling for a guy ... doesn't know for sure how he feels ... can't stop thinking about him to the point that it's almost a relief to actually not think about him so much, until that ache in her heart comes back again. "And your smiles cover your heart" ... she doesn't really know what he's thinking or feeling, and she probably feels like she's getting mixed signals about whether he returns those feelings or not. |

I think at least part of this song is about trust. I think it's from the viewpoint of someone who is able to center himself in solitude, but he still needs people in his life that he knows he can trust and depend on. He wants to do his own thing without worrying about getting hurt, physically or emotionally. |

I think this is about a man and a woman who have been friends for a long time, perhaps too shy or afraid to admit their feelings for each other. So he continues on, spending time with her when they can, sort of dying inside that he can't bring himself to tell her face-to-face how he feels. I can imagine fights and fallings out at times, both knowing how they feel but hampered by the inability to express their true feelings. |

The first few times I heard this, I just wrote it off as a song about cheating. But upon listening to the lyrics a bit more closely, I feel like this guy's girl left him, and even though she's gone, he feels like he's cheating if he is even remotely attracted to someone else. Sort of a wistful feel to it, obviously. |
