Dead on. It also refers to the forced Westernization of other countries, and why they might resent the West. He mentioned this when he was interviewed about his views re: "Shoot The Dog" and the Iraqi/Afghan wars. |

Two things:
(A) George has said that the songs he wrote from the Wham! and Faith periods were about women, and
(B) This was originally going to be given to his pal David Austin, but a mistake on the drum programming led George to keep it. :-) |

This is one of the most straightforward lyrics ever, and judging from George's own interviews, most of you are correct. It references his disillusionment with superstardom AND his newfound comfortability with his sexuality. |

Mickey is right on.
George actually hates this song and says he feels "no connection" to it because it's a series of "soap opera-type images." He wrote this song in his teens before he started writing personal songs. As a result, this song isn't really about anything or anyone at all. It's just a killer melody and some lyrics wrapped around it trying to tell the made-up story of some drama. |

George recorded this song twice; the first, called the "Wexler mix," produced by Jerry Wexler, never saw the light of day because George didn't like it. He ended up re-recording it with himself as the producer, and thats the song we all know today.
When he re-recorded it, he changed the lyrics on the fly. So on paper, it says one thing, but on the record, he sings another lyrics. HOWEVER, live, he sings it with the original lyric. |
