John Lennon – Imagine Lyrics 13 years ago
I disagree. I think conflicts are usually caused by scarcity and greed. Religion is just an excuse more often then not. And living without possessions would be painful. I think we have enough resources for everyone to live decent lives... if only we could distribute them more equally, then we wouldn't have so much trouble.

Honestly, I always felt conflicted about this song. I like the tune and I like the notion of peace. However, such a world would be terrible. No religion or personal possessions? That's like saying you should toss out your personal beliefs, opinions, and well being for the greater good. It would be terrible if someone managed to brainwash everyone to think the same way just so we can be happy. And I certainly wouldn't want 1000 other people owning my computer or home. Also living "for today" just creates a delusion that the future will be fine. (However, I don't have a problem with "sharing the world" and "no countries".)

However I realize that he was just saying "imagine" and I doubt he would interpret it the same way as I did above. In fact, I'm sure a lot of people truly believe that it's the only way to peace. But while I can imagine this pleasant dream, I would not want to make it a reality, because I don't think it would be so pleasant as the song makes it sound.

I would rather imagine a world where everyone can tolerate, accept, and get along with other people and their beliefs and opinions. A world where we see each other as equal worth, but different people nevertheless. A world where we can help each other live fulfilling lives, while preserving and nourishing our environment. A world where no individual or group "takes over".

While I'm sure Lennon meant well (and honestly I don't know much about his life, so I cannot know his true meaning behind it), I just have real difficulty listening to this beautiful song... because some words give me the creeps!

My thoughts exactly, until I looked up the word spurn. Apparently, it's a real word.
spurn(noun): 1. a) kick b)(obsolete)stumble 2. a) disdainful rejection b)contemptuous treatment

I always thought it was "I don't feel this burn" but now that "I don't feel this spern" is mentioned, I don't know. But it seems it would be burn, since spurn really isn't a well-known word. Or at least, I didn't know it.

Whoa. That's an interesting theory. I've never thought about what's under the flower. Way to think outside the box. Congrats!

(Sorry -- I just couldn't help writing the above post. :P )

The song is indeed VERY good.
I've several ideas about what this song is about. (other than the gardener theory lol)
No matter how I look at it, it's always felt an intensely emotional song.

One idea about the song is that it's a general song about how there is so much good left undone in the world (hence the song's title.) Pulling up the flower signifies what people do selfishly, without thinking of consequences, but secretly know it's wrong. Thus these people have nightmares of what they did wrong and are "shouting" for help. Certain "angels" show the others what they have done wrong so that they can fix what they have done (return the flower to the ground), and thus clear their consciences (come home).

Another idea is that this song is about a guy finding a girl and falling in love with her. (picking the flower). Then, when he finds she's unhappy with him (the flower wilts), he let's her go (puts the flower back). But he can't forget her because she's so special.

It's bothering me, though, because I feel like there's a better explanation out there. But I can't put my finger on it. I read a lot of the posts here, many of which I understand. Sigh... It would be nice to see an explanation from the writer of the song.

Ultimately, though, think you're all right. The song, like many of Rise Against's songs, has many layers. And that's what makes their songs so great. Some just simply make me want to cry.

Obviously this song is about a gardener. Come on people!

"In fields where nothing grew but weeds,"
-A gardener is working hard in the fields pulling weeds.

"I found a flower at my feet,/Bending there in my direction,/I wrapped a hand around its stem,/I pulled until the roots gave in,/Finding now what I've been missing,"
-Suddenly, the gardener finds a flower that he just has to pick up because it's the one thing missing from his garden.

"But I know"
-He knows a lot about plants.

"So I tell myself, I tell myself it's wrong./There's a point we pass from which we can't return."
-He knows that it's wrong for the flower to be spending time with lowly weeds, and that if it mates with other lowly plants its offspring will never be good enough for a garden.

"I felt the cold rain of the coming storm."
-The gardener feels the rain coming because he's not wearing a raincoat.

"All because of you/I haven't slept in so long./When I do I dream of drowning in the ocean,/Longing for the shore where I can lay my head down,"
-(In the point of view of the flower)The flower gets too much water from the constant raining. So dreaming of drowning in the ocean is a metaphor for the flower's constant torture.

"I'll follow your voice,/All you have to do is shout it out."
-The gardener can hear plants talking. This is due to the fact that he hasn't had a decent conversation with a human being in 15 years. He really wants to find that flower again and insists that if the flower would just shout, he could find it.

"Inside my hands these petals brown,/Dried up, falling to the ground/But it was already too late now./I push my fingers through the earth,/Return this flower to the dirt,/So it can live./I walk away now."
-The gardener can't get the flower back to his garden in time. He feels devastated when the flower wilts in his hand, so he has to put the flower back in the ground stat. Then he walks away, crying.

"But I know/Not a day goes by that I don't feel it's spurn."
-He can't forget about that wonderful plant.

"There's a point we pass from which we can't return."
-That darned plant is going to mate with lowly plants, and he'll never see a flower so precious again!

"I felt the cold rain of the coming storm./
-He really needs a new raincoat.

"All because of you/I haven't slept in so long,/When I do I dream of drowning in the ocean,/Longing for the shore where I can lay my head down,"
-The flower really can't stand being over-watered.

"I'll follow your voice,/All you have to do is shout it out."
-Again, the gardener is a plant-whisperer... erm, shouter.

"All because of you/All because of you/All because of you,/I haven't slept in so long./When
I do I dream of drowning in the ocean,/Longing for the shore where I can lay my head down,/Inside these arms of yours."
-Now he's talking in the plant's point of view. He imagines that the plant wants to be in the arms of the gardener, being taken away to a nice, semi-dry place full of flowers.

"All because of you,/I believe in angels./Not the kind with wings,/No, not the kind with halos,/The kind that bring you home,/When home becomes a strange place.
-Again, POV of flower. The gardener is an angel to the flower, ready to take the flower to a strange but wonderful place full of other flowers... a garden.

"I'll follow your voice,/All you have to do is shout it out. "
-The gardener is really eccentric.

This song means very much to me because I am very bad with plants, and every plant I try to grow dies.

Blue October – Sound Of Pulling Heaven Down Lyrics 15 years ago
Hey, now I think what this song is about! It's the end of the world, and he's spending his last day with the person he loves, doing things he loves like riding in hot air balloons, spending time at the beach, going to parties... and, probably, having sex. And meanwhle ("leaving all who broke your heart upon the shore") taking his and his loved one's mind off of all the bad that has happened in the past or present. The song also sounds spiritual in a way.

And I would have problems with this song if it was written for the Twilight series (not that it's a bad series- it's pretty good, but it has its flaws) since songs written for movies always bother me. BUT, I'm glad to hear that that's not the case.

By the way, the posted lyrics are wrong, as much as I don't want to offend dpm911's hard work. Please someone change them. I know some people wrote the correct lyrics below, but I think the correct lyrics should be right at the top.

THIS IS A GREAT SONG!

Da Vinci's Notebook – Another Irish Drinking Song Lyrics 15 years ago
Ha. I'm surprised no one commented yet.
This song is funny! Funny- in a depressing sort of way. You know... with everyone DYING and everything.

But sometimes you have to just kick back and listen to a comedic song once and a while.
Plus, these singers are pretty good. Acapella always astounds me in a way.

Anyway, if anyone can't tell from the lyrics or from the main singers accent... A lot of people are dead, so to grieve, the Irish people drink, dance, sing, and fight. Unfortunately, they don't seem to care that half the people died from overconsumption. Plus, they seem to escape the Irish culture here and there...
