Interpol – The Undoing Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song can function as both an oblique examination of the things we do (or happen to us) that change us (sometimes for better and worse, growth through pain, whatever doesn't kill us makes us stronger) that taps into a quasi-religious psycho-sexual angle (sin, sex, pain, pleasure) and it can also be a very literal examination of the creative tumult and challenges of personal fulfilment and friendship that occurred when Carlos left the band.

It sounds to my ears more like "On my own" as opposed to "All night long"

I think this has a lot to do with being famous and dealing with the issue of celebrity amidst a normal life with wife and kids and obviously related to that normalcy the onset of middle-aged ennui, both of these are metaphorically represented by zombie-ism.

There's a lot of references to what I see as the struggle with fame in:
We should swim in a fountain / Do not want to disappoint anyone
(the need to act like rockstars)
Now we'll leave the silver city 'cause all the silver girls / Gave us black dreams
(Hollywood with starlets and models giving dreams of a superficial life away from his wife and children)
Meet our friends out for dinner / When I said what I said I didn't mean anything
(more on the phoney nature of friendships among celebrities and hangers on)
