Oasis – Hey Now! Lyrics 12 years ago
I'm pretty sure this song probably has to do with the bands rise to fame and how that changed their lives in a lot of ways. I'm also pretty sure it's just an overall 'keep your head up' kind of tune. I listen to this song before a big date, event, or whatever else I need that little extra bit of motivation for.

"And time as it stands
Won't be held in my hands
Or living inside of my skin."

That Noel Gallagher is a smart guy.

Fastball – Fire Escape Lyrics 13 years ago
My personal feeling is that the song is about a guy that's not necessarily successful in the most common senses of the word. Especially when it comes to love. He realizes this and yet he's fine with it. He doesn't need to become what others feel he should. He's somewhat lost, but he's okay with that. He's going to make things harder on those around him as a result of all this. But, in the end, he can be himself. How 'bout you?

Grateful Dead – Touch Of Grey Lyrics 13 years ago
Great explanation of the "ride it out" vibe this song has going on. I definitely agree it's about taking things in stride, and not thinking too hard in the process. However, Jerry didn't write this song. Robert Hunter wrote the lyrics and Jerry wrote the music. I recently caught the video for this track on VH1's Pop Up Video where it stated this song was written about Garcia's "will to survive" after he went into a diabetic coma in 1986. I'm not sure that's ever been proven. I tend to agree that it's about aging gracefully and riding out the rough patches in life we will all inevitably face at some point. Also, if you haven't seen it, do check out the music video for 'Touch Of Grey'. Growing up it was one of the coolest things I had ever seen, and really, it still is. Love it. Great, great song.

Chris Cornell – Preaching The End of The World Lyrics 14 years ago
I read in an interview once where Chris said this song was inspired by watching one of those late night Televangelism programs where people are often "saved" or "healed", and where you can call in to make donations to fund the church and stay in the good graces of the Lord. I don't remember many details beyond that. But I do remember him saying that he was angry at how some people will use something like impending doom or the end of the world to make a quick buck off the believers. It's pretty much his response to that idea. Great tune.

Dog's Eye View – Everything Falls Apart Lyrics 14 years ago
Great song, and I can definitely relate. I think it's meaning isn't too difficult to figure out. When things go wrong, this guy feels at ease. For some people, like myself, being in a groove can be a scary thing. Life tends to feel stale and predictable. I'm sure many of you can understand where I'm coming from, right? When he says "Then I get to put it back together", I'm fairly certain he's being sarcastic. But despite the sarcasm putting things back together is when he really feels alive. It's the process of picking up the pieces that fulfills this guy. One could argue that he's delusional in his approach toward life, but not me. He gives it away at the end of the song with the lyric "You're gonna wake up scared. Gonna find yourself lost in hell...." He knows that the key to real happiness is keeping it simple and getting away from all the confusion. My two cents.

R.E.M. – Losing My Religion Lyrics 14 years ago
Probably their most well known song. "Losing My Religion" is a common saying down south (R.E.M. are from Georgia) and it basically means losing your temper or losing your cool. I saw Stipe on VH1 talking about this song not long ago. He commented on how it's a peculiar song and how be was surprised it became such a big hit for the band considering it doesn't follow the standard formula for successful singles. The main instrument Buck plays is a mandolin and the track really doesn't have a true chorus. I think it's more or less about someone going through a tough situation and wanting to isolate themselves for a period of time, but despite their attempt at doing so, their suffering is out in the open for others to see. He has to make a clean break, and he knows it, but he's unable to do so. My two cents.

Counting Crows – A Long December Lyrics 14 years ago
From VH1 Storytellers:

"In the middle of December of '95 my friend Jennifer got run over by a car, just creamed; and I spent that whole month, while we were just beginning the record and most of January and February in the hospital. Each morning and early afternoon then I'd go to the studio, the house where we were recording, and we'd play all afternoon and all night. It was a very weird time because there is a lot of stress, not that it's a big deal being a second album, but any album. They're just not that easy to make. It's a very stressful process, especially when you're first starting out. I spent a lot of time in the hospital which is pretty weird.

But one day I just left the studio about 2 in the morning, and I went to my friend Samantha and Tracy's house which is Hillside Manor, that's what we call it anyway, it's just a little house and I sat there talking with them. I woke them up, got them out of bed and made them talk to me for a couple hours, then I went home to my house.

I wrote this song between about 4 and 6 and then went to the hospital the next day, and came to the house and I played it for the guys before dinner and taught it to them after dinner. We played it about 6 or 7 times. It was take number 6. We just stopped, that was it. We recorded the song, it was done. We all went into the kitchen and had a cold beer, I grabbed Brad our engineer and ran back out about 5 minutes later, had him play the tape three times, just recorded all the harmonies, and we've never touched it since, that was it. It's a completely live song except for the harmonies.

It's a song about looking back on your life and seeing changes happening, and for once for me, looking forward and thinking, ya know, things are gonna change for the better - 'maybe this year will be better than the last' - and so, like a lot of songs on the end of an album it's not about everything turning out great, but it at least it is about hope... and the possibilities..."

The Smashing Pumpkins – Hummer Lyrics 14 years ago
"Hummer is the idea that life is not designed for those who are cheerful, whistling, daydreamers, (but) designed to be cruel and mean." Billy Corgan (1993)

That actually makes a lot of sense. Sometimes I find it easier to draw off the negative aspects of my life when I need something to keep me moving forward. It's almost like Corgan is saying that experiencing the bad things in life is the real gift of living, not being a content individual all the time. It can't be sunny everyday. It's all about the ups and downs, folks.

Soundgarden – Burden in My Hand Lyrics 14 years ago
One of my favorite songs from my all-time favorite band. "Down On The Upside" is a fabulous record overall and a worthy follow up to "Superunknown". As for the song? I think sometimes we take the lyrics a bit too literally. Most of the time metaphors are used to create a certain vibe or feeling within the song. That's more or less what's happening here. I think it's pretty much telling the story of someone that doesn't have their shit together as both alcoholism and abusive behavior are mentioned by Cornell. But regardless of these factors, he seeks sympathy. Note the lyric "Love's for everyone who isn't me" for confirmation of this. These awful things that he's done aren't really who he is and they don't define him. Or at least he believes that to be the case. The circumstances around him have caused him to be what he's become. And his actions are just a result of that. Great tune.

Gin Blossoms – Hey Jealousy Lyrics 15 years ago
This song was written by band founder and lead guitarist Doug Hopkins. He had battled alcoholism since his late teens. Hopkins was asked to leave the band in early 1992 before "New Miserable Experience" was completed and was replaced by Scott Johnson. The song, however, was included on the album and the rest is history. One line that always gets me is:

If I hadn't blown the whole thing years ago
I might be here with you

It was kind of like he predicted his own future. He committed suicide on December 5, 1993 shortly after receiving a gold disc for "Hey Jealousy" from A&M Records.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – My Friends Lyrics 15 years ago
Of all the songs in the Chili Peppers catalog, this may very well be my favorite. Who can't relate to this song in some way? As for it's meaning, I've heard a few different stories. One is Anthony Kiedis was in a hotel room while on tour watching TV and he came across a talent show featuring young kids. One of the little girls in the talent show had a rough story. She had been abused by a family member, but had not let it break her spirit. She said "to give your love no matter what." That's where the lyric in the song originates from. As for the rest? I've heard Anthony wrote it as a kind of "pat on the back" to friend and bandmate Flea, whom was going through a rough divorce at the time. But those two theories aside, I think the overall message is pretty clear. When you have people in your life that are looking out for you and are there when you need them, you're golden. Everyone needs a shoulder to cry on at one point or another.

Depeche Mode – Enjoy The Silence Lyrics 15 years ago
A truly amazing song. The only thing he needs or could ever want is at his finger tips. It's his. Very simple. Anything said by either parties can only complicate matters.

Mike Doughty – Looking at the World From the Bottom of a Well Lyrics 15 years ago
It's about drug addiction. Namely heroin. Mike was a heroin addict for many years. Finally he quit cold turkey. He wrote the song to chronicle his fight with addiction. I suppose when you're an addict little else, other than the drug, really matters. And while you may want to quit, it's not easy. I think that's the basic message here. Definitely not about a breakup.
