I like this one a lot. Dark and ominous and funky. The main guitar riff, as heard at 0:40 is the same tune Ian used in his Can't See Me song at about 2:23 - "I know mine, mine know me, I can sail upon your sea, I can sail upon your sea so easy" Squire also used that same lick in the soloing on Daybreak at a few live performances but not the album version. Such as the Hiroshima concert. |

I love this song. Jesus was a black woman. It IS very Led Zep. Unfortunately it has the worst line in any Roses song: "I'm hiding in the trees with a picnic". Really Squire? That was the best you could do there? |

Also the drumming is similar to the drum solo in James Brown's The Funky Drummer track. Not sure if its a sample or a recreation. Def a loop drum track, the "let" Reni, the greatest drummer in the world, play some bongos over the loop. That was a sin. And then Squire and Mani lay down some of the funkiest guitar and bass by two white men ever. |

The lyrics are a bit cliche aren't they. I mean, another "sold my soul to the devil" song? The riff is amazing and I do love the song but you can't take the lyrics too seriously. I've always felt Squire was talking about himself as being not too pretty and sure as hell can't sing. I wish the mix was better, that Mani and Reni were higher in the mix. As it is, its all guitar and you can't make out the bass line at all and I suspect the drums is a loop of Reni, not Reni playing for real. Listen to it again and focus on the drums. There is no human emotion in them, no variation, they just repeat perfectly like a metronome. |

For me this song was about doing some lines - "dust", "ready to blow", "his stings all gone Now he's begging you, begging you" is all about coke and wanting to do more. "Make all the dust that you can." Then, there is a bit of imagery about Jesus with the sky dividing and being gone but still with you... But mostly the frantic intense nature of the song induces the speed feeling of doing some dust. I have no idea what the fly on the coachwheel is about. So, given their histories I'd say Brown contributed the Jesus imagery and Squire had the dust parts. |
