At face value this song is about a hangover. However, I think this song is an extended metaphor: alcohol-the 'high' of a relationship hangover-fallout after the relationship Sometimes lines like "taste it" seem specifically vague, so they could refer to either alcohol or the experience of love, freedom, etc. Also, asking morning to "bring on your pain" is a little too dramatic for a simple hangover, wouldn't you say? Notice how often he repeats that he thinks he had a relationship. In a hangover, wouldn't you focus more on your headaches/illness (he never mentions these)? Living in "slo-mo" could just be depression, or the dream-like state of shock following a fallout. Finally, consider the lines "I can't shake it... I just can't shake it tonight." Notice how this is easily the most emotional part of the song. If you can't shake your feelings for another person, it makes sense that you would get emotional. If you can't shake a hangover, or the desire to drink alcohol, I don't see why it would be sung as such an epiphany. He is singing about how he can't stifle his feelings for someone. |
