I suspect The National Midnight Star is a propaganda publication. That seems to be the theme of this song as I see it. To be more specific, I think the theme of this song is the influence of propaganda on public opinion and the resulting adverse effects on society. "truth is often bitter left unsaid" is a great play on words that I have always loved. |

This is easily my favorite song from Counterparts. I agree it could be about the self-motivated dream chaser, but the last line "What kind of difference can one person make?" could be interpreted to be more specifically about those who dedicate their lives to helping others and/or "changing the world".
But I would like to take this a little deeper and suggest that it may really be about the numerous times in our lives when we can choose to be selfish and short-sighted or choose to consider the greater good of humanity as we make decisions and form our opinions. |

I was also unaware that this song was written specifically for Robbie Whalen. Very sad. Makes me wonder if the title "Grace Under Pressure" was also a tribute to Robbie Whalen. My favorite line from this song is "I feel the way you would", which is a clear testament to the influence that one person's life can have on others. I can't honestly say this is my favorite song or even my favorite from Grace Under Pressure, but it is truly a beautiful song that I have always loved. |

neilpete has hit pretty much dead on to what I have always interpreted this song to be: a comparison or analogy of computers and the human mind. And as others have also mentioned, the song goes a step further, examining how the ability to deviate, elevate, escalate, etc., beautifully separates the human mind from computers. |
