I think this song is about finding someone you only think you are in love with. I think she is with somebody but she knows it is not right.

But i think she switches who she is talking to throughout the song.

This song is amazing. I have a lot of atheist friends that tease me about believing in an 'invisible God'. So this song really helps me just not mind what other people say =] I don't mind it when people think I'm stupid for my beliefs. I actually feel bad for people who don't have beliefs of any kind. So first of all, U2 is a Christian band guys, come on. This song is about sin and how much people crave it. "you" is referring to sin (possibly an addiction) It starts and ends with the same thing because he is calling out to his "angel" per-say, but he falls back into sin. then the whole thunder, rain part at the end means that he is seeing the truth that whatever he is doing is not right so now he is going to quench his thirst with truth. I know that that is the intended reason for the song, but I take it more deeply. I take this song is about depression pills or something of the sort. "while we all bow down to you." There are a lot of people who don't need to be taking these pills, but think that it's the only way because of how many people do take them. "How can you mend my affliction If you're the sickness and not the cure?" Meaning the fact that everyone is turning to anti-depressants instead of dealing with the problem. Now I understand that some people have to take them because of actual medical reasons. I just think that too many people are turning to meds for the answers. "I cannot prove this solution You aren't the one that I thought you were." meaning that they are not always the answer and that people need to learn to be more mentally strong and not rely on something so absurd. this song is about me...my crazy self...the first verse is the story of my life. I have major issues with depression even though I am so close to God. At one point I just gave up completely....which brings in the second verse....I looked for love in all the wrong places and ended up getting into relationships I really shouldn't have. The most previous one I thought was just perfect. But I ended it for the fear I would do something stupid (he never would). Nobody knows any of this. (except for all of you now but none of you truly know me) So I guess my whole life I've been crying out for help and nobody hears it...The the last line of the song, "he is running a hundred miles an hour in the wrong direction" represents him. I ended it...shattered him. I don't know if he is ok or not because he won't come to school...so now in hatred of myself I'm just ripping apart at the seams...I won't show it but I am falling apart on the inside...I don't know what to do. I don't want to go back to this...My depressed self where I can't find God anywhere...stop the bleeding God...Let somebody hear me this time....... |

This song reminds me of a quote that DC talk uses in one of their songs. It is so true! We only act like Christians around people who we feel we have to. Then we get to work or school and just push it all to the back of our minds. How are we supposed to share what we have found in God's great love if we keep doing that? To all you people out there who think "Christians" are judgmental and rude, I actually could say that I agree. Sort of. Not all of us are. It's the ones that go about this in the wrong way and try to force crap on you. Honestly, whether you believe it or not, God loves all of us no matter how bad we screw up. As long as we go back to Him. Trust me, His arms are always open to anybody (if only you knew half of my past). I love this song because that is what I get from it. That all of us "Christians" need to stop just pretending and actually live your life how we are supposed to. Maybe if all of us could do that, people wouldn't hate us as much. I totally agree with Absent minded. It's getting very old being 'in this same old mess'. On our flag the orange represents the Christian side and the green represents Catholicism (generalization) and the white is the peace between them. HA! What peace?
